Fans Rip Haney For Wanting To Be A Billionaire – ‘Do Some Rebranding, Work On Your Corniness’
Devin Haney has teased a ‘sweet idea’ for his next fight following the Ryan Garcia fight.
Haney suffered a majority decision loss, only to see the result turned into a no-contest. This was after Garcia failed two positive tests for Ostarine, getting a year ban in the process. While Haney kept his WBC Junior Welterweight Title, Garcia missed weight for the fight; he ended up vacating as his brand was damaged. He was ordered to face Sandor Martin. However, only Top Rank made a purse bid of $2.42 million as Haney’s commercial brand suffered.
Haney is suing Garcia for loss of earnings as he plots his next move. He has the option of staying at 140 pounds. He could box Teofimo Lopez for the WBO belt. They have had a rivalry since their days at 135 pounds. A fight with the IBF Champion, Liam Paro, is also possible, as they both work closely with DAZN. There is an outside chance of a bout with the WBA Champion Isaac Cruz if Haney wants to crossover to PBC.
Haney’s Options
Alternatively, he could move up to 147. The primary target would be Mario Barrios. Barrios is seen the least risky option from the other champions at 147 such as Jaron Ennis and Eimantas Stanionis. Haney showed that he struggled to deal with big punchers in the Garcia fight. Although Barrios has been linked with a fight against Manny Pacquiao, some believe he could face the WBC Welterweight Champion.
Nevertheless, for Haney to get that billionaire status, he must face the big names. He has shown that he only sells if he has the right dancing partner. He reportedly sold over 500,000 PPVs for the Ryan Garcia fight. That was largely due to Garcia’s massive social media following. Before the Haney fight, Garcia had also sold over 1.2 million PPVs for the Gervonta Davis fight. Haney’s fight before Garcia was against Regis Prograis. Despite selling out the arena in his hometown of the Bay Area, Haney reportedly sold around 50,000 PPVs.
Haney’s Aim
His boxing style is also not appealing, with his last knockout coming in 2019. So, to get those big purses, he must face the big names. He has called for the Gervonta Davis fight, but that could only happen at 140. If Haney moves up to 147, it is less likely to happen. A rematch with Ryan Garcia will be even bigger. That all depends on Garcia keeping himself well during his ban. He has entered into rehab as he aims to tackle his substance abuse issues. Based on his prior comments, Haney would like Garcia next.
“When you sign the contract, when he said he’s going to be clean going into the fight and I’m going to be clean, there ain’t going to be nothing in my system, there ain’t going to be nothing in his system, and he didn’t hold up his bargain….This whole situation has cost me money. I would love for my next fight to be against Ryan Garcia. If everything is right. That’s not feasible. I may return sooner, but the desire to face Garcia remains strong. That is the fight the world wants to see. Of course, I want to get mine back in blood, I am just that kind of fighter,” Haney said
