Boxing fans reacted after Teofimo Lopez added Canelo Alvarez’s trainer, Eddy Reynoso, to his set-up.

The news means Reynoso joins as a co-trainer with Teofimo’s father, Teofimo Lopez Sr. Lopez, who is the WBO Junior Welterweight Champion, had been linked with this move after recently sparring with Canelo. Lopez joined Canelo during the latter’s preparation for the Edgar Berlanga fight. While Lopez’s sparring was not part of Canelo’s preparation for Berlanga, the Mexican took time out to give some pointers. The following clip shows them sparring lightheartedly. Canelo also supported Lopez’s desire to face Terence Crawford after Teo’s win over Steve Claggett in his last fight. Meanwhile, Lopez admitted that talks were ongoing with Reynoso over a collaboration.

“My father and Reynoso are talking together, and I think that’s the best [option]. I don’t move without my father, and my father has definitely pushed this move for me to go to Canelo’s camp, and my dad was there. It’s been great. We’ll see what happens,” Lopez said

Now, the news has been confirmed. The following picture shows Teo alongside his father and Reynoso.

Reynoso has pedigree, given he won Trainer of the Year in 2022. Lopez has had a strained relationship with his father during his career. There is a perception that Lopez struggles for consistency. A win over Vasiliy Lomachenko was followed with a loss against George Kambosos Jr. Lopez, who would move up to 140, then had mixed performances. A laboured win over Sandor Martin was followed by a comprehensive victory against Josh Taylor. This suggested Teo needed changes to take his career to the next level. Naturally, there are question marks over whether Teo will now pursue the big fights.

There are big bouts available for him. A fight against Devin Haney could present itself at 140 or 147. Haney recently revealed that Teofimo turned down the chance to fight in October. But Lopez shut down recent reports that he was in talks to face Haney. An alternative is to face Ryan Garcia. Lopez previously said he rejected a $1.5 million offer to face Ryan.

Bill Haney Reacts

Oscar De La Hoya denied those claims. But Oscar has talked up Teofimo as a possible opponent for Garcia once he returns to boxing after his year-ban for his failed Ostarine tests. Ryan was also part of Reynoso’s team, giving Lopez an insight into what to expect from Garcia. It also makes a Garcia-Lopez fight even bigger. However, Bill Haney says Teofimo has declined. Lopez’s latest move has gotten fans talking.

“There was a time when Teo was doing his thing. He was doing backflips. He was making headlines inside the ring. We’re talking more about what he’s saying outside the ring than inside the ring. I think that’s what he’s suffering from. “He hasn’t had any exciting fights. He doesn’t have anyone on the table that is realistically that he can fight. So, he’s just reaching. Wherever he learned it from, I don’t want to put it at, but he definitely has some build-up hatred towards us,” Bill Haney stated
