Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney could enter the sport of boxing after reportedly having discussions with Misfits Boxing.

Rooney is one of United’s most decorated footballers, having won several league titles and the Champions League. He ended his United career as the club’s top scorer with 251 goals, surpassing Bobby Charlton. Since then, Rooney has entered the world of management. So far, that has proved more difficult than his playing career.

The ex-Birmingham manager was sacked from his job in January after a poor run of results, leaving them on the brink of relegation. But rather than pursue another coaching job, Rooney seems keen on a career change. This is not the first time that Rooney has been linked with the sport of boxing. Eddie Hearn has previously spoken about how the footballer had been in touch, as the promoter talked up his chances in the sport after seeing his sparring session.

Rooney’s Boxing

“He won’t mind me saying but after every big fight, especially with a YouTuber, sometimes Rooney will fire me a message. That was in the living room after about eight bottles of red. Wayne Rooney had a very limited amateur pedigree but could still fight.”Wayne Rooney training, and I said to him, ‘Imagine the shape you could get in as well. You’ll get right back into shape.’ Against Jake Paul at Old Trafford,” Hearn said

This naturally begs the question: who would Rooney fight? The two most obvious contenders would be Jake Paul and KSI. They are the two that would generate the most amount of money and will resonate with casual fans. Paul is unlikely to take that fight since his focus is now on fighting professional boxers after his first-round knockout win over Andre August. KSI had confirmed he was offered the fight but turned it down, saying he had no interest in it. But if there is enough demand for it, things could change.

Rooney On KSI

“I hope he doesn’t get annoyed that I said this, but Wayne Rooney hit me up being like, ‘oh, we should fight,’ and I said no I just don’t want to do that. I don’t know, if Wayne Rooney is down of course I think it would be good to have him in the [influencer boxing] space. I know Wayne Bridge is another person that’s been interested in the [influencer boxing] space,” KSI stated

Rooney would follow in the footsteps of other sporting icons such as Andrew Flintoff and Sonny Bill Williams. Both have crossed over into the sport, showing it is possible. Williams’ record stands at 9-1, with four knockouts, showing he had the skills to compete in the ring. As for Flintoff, he only had one fight. But the ex-cricketer did come out victorious, as the decision paid off. But for Rooney to secure a bout, he must get a training camp under his belt to be taken seriously.
