Fans Predict Oliveira vs. Gamrot – ‘He Will Retire Him’
Fans gave their pick for Charles Oliveira vs. Mateusz Gamrot’s lightweight title fight this weekend.
Oliveira has plenty to prove following his last performance. He was knocked out in a single round by Ilia Topuria, as the latter became the new UFC Lightweight Champion, picking up the vacant belt at UFC 317. Oliveira’s plan went out of the window, as he chose to exchange with a KO artist, when his strengths lie in his submission game. While there are worries over the quick turnaround time, as UFC 317 was in June, Charles is confident heading into this bout.
Gamrot got the fight after Rafael Fiziev withdrew with an injury. He beat Ludovit Klein in May, putting the Dan Hooker loss at UFC 305 behind him. There may not be a better time to face Oliveira, given the many unanswered questions heading into this fight.
Pre-Fight
“I think his (Charles Oliveira’s) kickboxing can give (Mateusz) Gamrot problems. Not to mention, Charles works extremely well off his back. He’s so dangerous with that. So I think that nullifies Gamrot’s mixing of the levels,” Whittaker continued. “Which means — if we’re looking at it in a more kickboxing sense, Oliveira, I think, has more (sic) cleaner strikes. But, it is relatively soon after the (Ilia) Topuria loss,” Robert Whittaker said
“My coaches say the same thing — this is a little bit too early — but I am not his coaches. He’s smart, he’s one of the biggest names in the lightweight division, so he knows what he’s doing. This is the Rio card and he [hasn’t fought for] a long time in Brazil, maybe that’s why he takes this fight. This is a risk, of course, but I am not his coach, so we will see what happens in the cage.
“I am more than ready to fight with him. I am not afraid to scramble with him on the ground, exchange punches in the fight. I have no pressure — God [has given] me the conditioning to solve [him]. I’m going to Rio and I want to take [Oliveira’s] place [atop the division’s rankings],| Gamrot stated
