Fans Outraged By Possible Jake Paul vs. Chavez Jr. Fight – ‘Shameless, A Chucky-Cheese Belt’
Jake Paul could box Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for a title at some point in the future.
That is according to WBA President Gilberto Mendoza Jr. His comments arrived following Paul’s impressive win over Mike Perry. He dropped the BKFC fighter three times on his way to a sixth-round stoppage. It took Paul’s record to 10-1, as he won his last four bouts. His only loss has come against Tommy Fury, who was the first boxer he ever faced. After his win, Paul indicated his desire to fight Mike Tyson on November 15.
WBA President Reacts
That was also followed by a call out of UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Alex Pereira. Despite his record’s growing number of UFC fighters, Paul could box Chavez for a title. Chavez had his first fight since 2021 when he beat MMA fighter Uriah Hall via a unanimous decision on the Paul-Perry card. Chavez is a former world champion who won the WBC Middleweight Title in 2011. But now that he is 38, he may present Paul with a realistic chance of beating him. They have been linked with a fight since 2021, and now could be the right time to make that fight.
While it presents Paul with a chance to win a world title, there are several concerns over the decision. Paul has not fought any top contenders to justify getting a title shot. He may bring in a lot of crossover fans to the sport and generate big paydays, but it will fly in the face of others who are working up the ranks. There is also a concern with the increasing number of belts in boxing. Fighters have to pay sanctioning fees for each title they hold.
This reduces the incentive for them to have more belts. If the WBA were to create a bespoke title, it would simply reduce the value of each belt. In addition, there is a danger that the sport turns fans away with less competitive fights.
Paul Fights Back
The UFC is often praised for giving fans the best possible match-ups. Although Paul does bring excitement to events, a lot of his fights are not competitive. He was fighting at cruiserweight against Perry, giving him a significant weight advantage. This was shown as Paul dropped Perry in the first round, as he overpowered his opponent. But Paul has said he wants all the smoke, meaning fans could see this fight.
“People say everything about weight difference. Forty [pounds], 40 whatever. I was 212 [pounds] in the ring tonight so 10-pound difference. That’s common in boxing. Alex Pereira rehydrates to 240 [pounds]. So I want someone who, when I [mess] them up like I did tonight, there is no excuses.
“Alex Pereira, 6-foot-4, 240 pounds, kickboxing world champion, two-division champion in UFC. When I beat him, what…can they say? People are like, ‘Yeah, whatever.’ Write me off. Keep writing me off. That’s what you guys have always done in every single facet of my life since I was…8 years old. Do you think it’s ever going to…stop me, when you guys say I can’t do something? That’s what I want, you silly…dweebs,” Paul stated
