Fans Cry Robbery After Davis-Roach Ends In A Majority Draw

Gervonta Davis retained his WBA Lightweight Title following a controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach: 115-113 for Davis, 114-114, 114-114.

Roach was the better fighter, as he silenced Davis, who looked far from the knockout artist that fans are used to seeing. Roach was using his hooks to try and back Davis up in the earlier rounds. But Davis was landing the harder shots, using his double jabs to try and set up the power shots. However, Roach was fully aware of Tank’s moves, given they have grown up with each other in the boxing game. That showed as Roach started to turn it around near the middle of the fight. The CompuBox numbers had Roach landing 112 punches out of his 400.

Meanwhile, Davis connected with less at 103 out of 279. Roach also had the better of it with the jabs, landing with 25 out of 148, while Davis connected with 10 out of 169. Tank only got the better of things with the power punches landed: He hit the target with 93 compared to Roach’s 87. The turning point in the fight was in the ninth round.

Davis took a knee before going to his corner to get a towel to wipe some grease from his eye. Tank did not give Roach or the referee any warning before this. It should have been declared a knockdown, giving Roach a 10-8 round. That proved costly, as Roach was denied a historic win. In his post-fight comments, Davis blamed grease for pouring in his eye which hindered his performance. That has set the narrative for a rematch, but Davis was lucky to avoid a defeat.

Reaction

“When you are sweating and s*** like that, the grease came into my face and it burnt my eyes. Yo why you all booing like I’m talking b*****?” Davis

“Gervonta is a great fighter. I thank him for the opportunity to show the world to all the people that was doubting me, all the people that was talking [rubbish] all the fake boxing media… even though I didn’t win tonight — I thought I did — but that’s a win for me in my book. But we not satisfied. We need a real W. But if you voluntarily take a knee and the ref starts counting that should be a knockdown. If that’s a knockdown I win the fight,” Roach

“Horrible that a fight of that magnitude was decided on a referee mistake, a mistake that should have been correctable … can’t just take a knee,” Promoter Lou DiBella
