Fans Boo After Mayweather Outclasses Gotti III
Floyd Mayweather dominated John Gotti III in their exhibition, which went the full distance in their eight-rounder, leaving fans booing in the final round.
The rematch had plenty of people talking based on their first fight. That first bout was stopped after both boxers ignored the referee’s warning over using foul language. A brawl then broke out as Gotti swung at Mayweather, and the entourage from both sides jumped into the ring. Gotti got a six-month suspension, leaving him with plenty to prove in the rematch. In his pre-fight comments, Gotti promised to bring his fighting spirit since he was fighting in Mexico.
“Every proud Mexican fighter always shows up to fight and they’re willing to die in that ring. That’s something to admire and respect. As my father said, if I can bring half of that spirit on Saturday, we’ll be in good shape. We’ll fight a good fight and we’ll put on a good show,” Gotti
Mayweather Dominates
However, it was all one-sided. From just the second round, Mayweather had the referee switched after suggestions he was not doing his job. Floyd became annoyed after the referee warned him for punching at the back of the head. Mayweather, however, put that behind him to dominate. His jab was peppering Gotti, who often missed with his punches, leaving Mayweather to counter at will.
In round three, Gotti was stuck on the ropes, doing little to hurt Mayweather. Mayweather dominated the fourth, landing shots to the body, while Gotti landed one left hook in the fifth. Given that it was all one-way traffic, fans booed in the final round as Mayweather made it look easy.
After his win, Mayweather shared a touching moment with Julio Cesar Chavez. There were suggestions that Mayweather could box him. Money Mayweather shut down those claims, stating that it would not be a good look since Chavez is much older. But Mayweather did tease three more possible exhibitions.
Post-Fight
“Gotti is tough as nails. He’s my guy. But we had to put on a show for the people. And I want to thank Gotti for being a man of his word and we ran it back twice. He’s one of the legends I look up to and he paved the way for me. But the two getting into the ring to box? He’s older now, and if I do an exhibition with him it’s not going to look good for me. We just got a call about a three-exhibition deal and it’s a crazy number. …So, we don’t know,” Mayweather stated
