Ex-World Champ Slams Shakur’s Resume – ‘Who Have You Fought?’

Keith Thurman has slammed Shakur Stevenson’s resume, saying he does not deserve the Gervonta Davis fight.
Shakur is a three-weight world champion who is undefeated with a 23-0 record. Shakur has won belts from featherweight to lightweight, as he is the current WBC champion at 135 pounds. He defended his belt with a stoppage win against Josh Padley in his last fight. He has been accused of being a boring fighter, who has not boxed the big names. But he does have wins against Oscar Valdez and Robson Conceicao, who have won world titles. And yet, Shakur is struggling to secure the big bouts. Despite links with Gervonta Davis, the latter does not have a desire to face him.
Tank has said Stevenson is a boring fighter, downplaying his skills. Shakur has also not been helped by his hand issues, which have impacted his ability to secure knockouts. Thurman developed a reputation for being a knockout artist before his own injuries. He also arguably beat better opposition than Shakur when he overcame Danny Garcia to become the Unified Welterweight Champion. Boxing fans have been frustrated by not getting the big fights over the years, and this is no exception. Thurman, though, did not feel Shakur had done enough to earn his shot.
Thurman Reacts
“Do something. What have you done? Who have you fought? Who have you beaten? Tank has got names. He’s been in the fire. I don’t think Shakur has been in the fire. I think his matchmaking has been way weaker than just resumes. People see his skills. I get it, but word on the street is that boy has been slapped. Go through some dogs. Go through a few good names on the list.
“He’s [Shakur] small. I don’t think him and Rolly [would work]. Rolly is too big. The resumes not there. I don’t ever think about him and Tank. You guys [the media] do, but I don’t know why. It’s like some fantasy football bull s***. I don’t think it’s real. I don’t think he’s done a lot. Just one. Put one on the resume. I would like two. Two good names on the resume before stepping to Tank,” Thurman said
Nevertheless, Thurman also faces questions about his resume. He has only had one boxing fight since 2019, when he lost to Manny Pacquiao. He defeated Mario Barrios in that fight via a unanimous decision. However, his career has taken a nosedive due to injuries which have hindered his activity. He withdrew from his Tim Tszyu fight last year due to a bicep injury.
That meant he missed out on becoming a two-weight world champion, as he could have secured the WBO Junior Middleweight Belt. Thurman will face Brock Jarvis in his next fight, knowing a win could set up the Tszyu fight in the summer. Thruman hopes a win can propel his career back to the heights that once made him one of the most feared boxers in the sport.
