Eubank Jr. Wants The Biggest Names – ‘It’s Ramping Up’
Chris Eubank Jr. expects to face the biggest names next year.
Eubank Jr. will box Kamil Szeremeta in Riyadh, Saudia, Arabia on October 12. This takes place on the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol card, providing him with a massive platform to showcase his skills. He is coming off the biggest win of his career, having stopped Liam Smith in his last fight. The win avenged the stoppage loss he suffered in the first fight. Eubank has signed a deal with BOXXER as he aims for the biggest bouts.
Eubank has several possible options. Prior to his current fight, he was reportedly in talks to box Canelo Alvarez. The fight never happened, as Canelo chose to box Edgar Berlanga, whom he beat via a unanimous decision during Mexican Independence Weekend. A fight with Canelo could be made for the following reasons.
Eubank’s Options
It offers Canelo the opportunity to travel to the UK. Eubank has a massive fan base, as the fight would undoubtedly sell out. That offers Canelo the chance to earn a big purse while also not taking the biggest risk. Eubank is known for being a 160-pounder, so moving up to 168 would be a test.
Another alternative is to rematch Billy Joe Saunders. They faced off in 2014 as Saunders secured a split-decision win. Since that moment, Saunders has had a better career. He became a two-weight world champion and secured the Canelo fight. While Alvarez knocked him out, Saunders found success by outboxing the Mexicans for parts of the fight. Saunders has not boxed since that loss in 2021, making Eubank a potential favorite in the rematch.
There is also the chance to box Terence Crawford. Eubank worked with Crawford’s trainer, Bomac, during his last fight when he defeated Smith. That gives Eubank an insight into what he can expect in facing the two-weight undisputed champion. Crawford has spoken about wanting to fight Canelo at 168. Facing Eubank Jr. at 160 pounds gives Crawford an insight into what to expect against Canelo at a higher weight class. But if that were to happen, Bomac would likely stick with Crawford, meaning that Eubank would need another trainer in his corner.
Eubank Reacts
There is an outside chance of making the Conor Benn fight. They agreed to face each other in 2022, but the fight was to be called off after Ben failed VADA tests for Clomiphene. Eddie Hearn recently confirmed that Ben’s future would become clearer by October, provided that the boxer resolves his legal issues. If that does mean serving a ban, then there is still the chance to make that fight. But Eubank would likely want more of the pie following the failed VADA tests. Either way, Eubank was looking forward to what was on the horizon.
“After everything I’ve been through and all the things I’ve done over the last 10-12 years, this next year or two is probably going to be the biggest part of my career, the most important. And that’s very rare. Usually when guys get older things kind of whittle down. For me it’s ramping up, which is why I need to be active. Taking a year off, it wasn’t ideal but, you know, we’ve got through what we’ve got through and now we have the opportunity to be active and consistent over the next 12 months,” Eubank Jr. said
