Eubank Jr. Confident He Will Fight Canelo – ‘Who Else Can He Fight?
Chris Eubank Jr. is confident that he will fight Canelo Alvarez next year.
Eubank Jr. has not been in the boxing ring since avenging his Liam Smith loss last year. It was arguably the biggest win of Eubank’s career, as there were question marks over whether he should retire. In the first Smith fight, Eubank was stopped for the first time in his career. His chin, known for being one of his best assets, looked redundant.
However, he teamed up with Terence Crawford’s trainer, Brian McIntyre, as he looked like a new fighter. He was linked with fighting Canelo before the Mexican went ahead with Edgar Berlanga. Any such fight ideally would have to be in the UK to generate big numbers. Eubank is a household name in the UK and has headlined PPV events.
Eubank On Canelo
His star power does not crossover into the US. Meanwhile, the possibility of Canelo fighting in the UK for the first time would be massive. But that would require Canelo to fight outside of the US, which he has made his home. Eubank was optimistic that a fight would get made.
“A lot of people are not happy with this fight that he’s chosen. There’s only a certain pool of fighters that Canelo can now fight, which is why I’m not worried about this fight falling through in September. Because who else can he fight? There’s only a few guys,” Eubank said
The comments follow Eubank’s recent decision to sign with BOXXER. He left Wasserman Boxing after suggestions he could not get the big fight. After the collapse of the Conor Benn fight, where the Brit failed two VADA tests for Clomiphene, Eubank’s targets were fewer. The decision to choose BOXXER was questioned since they do not have a strong working relationship with the Saudis. Meanwhile, Sky has not had a PPV event this year involving a mega name.
Eubank On Crawford
However, Eubank is confident in his ability to attract the big names. One of those who was linked included Crawford. They share the same trainer, but Bomac would side with Bud, given their long working relationship. It would also add an element of intrigue with both fighters being aware of each other’s skills.
While that may be the case, Bomac dismissed suggestions that the fight was ever entertained. But Eubank did state that if it went ahead, he fancied his chances due to his bigger frame. This may have been partly due to the reaction to Crawford’s win over Israil Madrimov in his last fight. Crawford boxed at 154 for the first time but failed to stop Madrimov, who landed more power shots. Eubank felt size would matter.
“We’ve got a trainer who’s training both of us and if the fight does happen he’s going to go with the guy he’s come up with so he’s going to be sharing the information. Which is not a great thing to think about. But I’m very confident. I think he’s too small,” Eubank stated
