Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn’s final presser threw up more talking points.

Eubank Jr. made a point of going after Eddie Hearn during the build-up. The presser was no exception, with Eubank once again preventing Hearn from speaking. Hearn did his best to stand his ground, trying to reduce Eubank Jr.’s influence. The Matchroom promoter stood down from the podium, allowing Frank Smith to take his place. While Smith took to the panel, Eubank remained bullish as ever in shutting down team Matchroom.

Eubank In Control

Eubank’s Mind Games

Eubank Jr. also got a laugh out of Benn when the pair traded verbals. Much has been said about the difference in weight. Eubank will drop down to 160, with a ten-pound rehydration clause, while Benn moves up from 154. Benn has been adamant that he will stop Eubank.

However, his last two performances don’t help him. He did not stop two 154-pounders in Rodolfo Orozco and Peter Dobson, while Eubank’s stoppage loss to Liam Smith needs to be put into context. Eubank was trying to make a career-low weight of 157 pounds before he faced Smith, as the Benn fight was then called off. Eubank made Benn break character when he said he would teach him a lesson and put him in detention.

Eubank Jr. also has many reasons for beating Benn. He has spoken at length about Benn’s failure to address the public over the reasons for his failed tests. Benn has not disclosed if there was any Clomiphene in his system, nor has he given an explanation as to what had happened. Eubank admitted he was taking Benn lightly the first time around. However, the animosity this time has gotten Eubank focused, which may spell danger for Benn.

Eubank’s Intention

“Conor speaks about pressure and dealing with it but, there’s a reason why he had his training camp in Spain. The kid had to flee his own country to prepare for this fight. He knew that he couldn’t handle the pressure of walking these UK streets and having people shouting out ‘drug cheat’ and egg jokes. He didn’t want to be involved in any of that. So he took himself away, he hid away. Now he’s back and now he thinks he can use me to kind of get back into the good graces.

“I haven’t fled, I haven’t hid away from anything. I’ve been to gyms all over London these past two months. I’ve been and spoke to kids, I’ve done all the media obligations I’ve needed to do around the country. I’ve felt the energy on the streets of the UK over the last two months. It’s real. People are invested in this. Everywhere I go people are screaming. Most of the time it’s positive, which is a new thing for me – I’m still getting used to that. I am happy with the place I am at,” Eubank said
