Errol Spence Jr.'s Future Uncertain; Fans Tell Him To Retire

Errol Spence Jr.’s career is in limbo with suggestions that he should retire.

Spence will turn 35 next year. He is in the latter part of his career. Spence will be a candidate for a Future of Hall of Fame position. He is the former Unified Welterweight Champion with only one defeat. However, that one defeat occurred in catastrophic circumstances. He faced Terence Crawford in an Undisputed Welterweight Clash last June. Not only did the result not go his way, but the performance was short of what Spence could do.

Spence was dropped to the canvas three times as he was stopped in round nine. Spence never got the rematch as negotiations broke down. The Truth then underwent cataract surgery on his right eye. This was a worrying sign since Spence had overcome two car crashes before this, one of which resulted in a detached retina. The Truth recognized he had been through a lot recently.

Spence’s Struggles

“A lot of people take it lightly just because I came back and fought and all that but that’s serious stuff. It’s not too many people that go high speed in a Ferrari and get thrown from a Ferrari, land on solid concrete and still be here to talk today, still survive, still be coherent and everything.  That was traumatic and a brutal experience that I went through,” Spence said

Spence also has undergone numerous things outside of the ring. He split from his long-term trainer, Derrick James. The latter came under fire for his gameplan in the Spence-Crawford fight. However, their troubles were not related to the performance. According to reports, James has taken Spence to court after suggestions that the latter owes him money. This is due to wages over the Crawford fight. It is in court as relations have soured. Spence’s next fight is also uncertain. He has consistently been linked with a fight against Sebastian Fundora.

Fundora beat Tim Tszyu to become the WBO and WBC Junior Middleweight Champion. Spence jumped in the ring to demand the Fundora fight. Despite varying reports that a fight was close, no deal has been announced. Spence has also been busy with promoting other fighters. He has Frank Martin signed to his management company. Martin is coming off a loss to Gervonta Davis, which was the biggest fight of his career. Spence promoted Martin at the presser, showing he may enter the promotional side of boxing. While Martin lost, Spence saw it as a positive experience.

Should He Retire?

“But I like the promoter side. I feel like it might be my calling a little bit, being a promoter and looking at the young guys coming up and helping them get to the top of their level, because that’s where we at right now. He [Martin]’s at the top right now, and once he’s at the top, you’re the man,” Spence stated

There was speculation that Spence would return soon after fans claimed he had been keeping his training under wraps. However, Spence shut down those claims. Now, some fans have suggested he should retire.
