Errol Spence Jr. Hints At A Return; Is It At 154 Or 160?
Errol Spence Jr. has suggested that he will return to the ring soon with a fight at either junior middleweight or middleweight.
The Truth has been out of the ring for over a year. His last fight was against Terence Crawford for the Undisputed Welterweight Championship. The Truth was dropped three times before getting stopped in round nine. The win made Crawford the first Undisputed Welterweight Champion of the four-belt era. There were negotiations for a rematch.
Spence’s Next Fight
There were suggestions that a rematch was going to happen at 154. But the talks broke down. Spence would then have cataract surgery on his right eye. Spence blamed vision problems for the reason why he was getting hit so many times. That frustrated Crawford, who moved up to junior middleweight. Now, Spence could do the same. There were reports that Spence was likely to fight Sebastian Fundora next.
Fundora is the WBO and WBC Junior Middleweight Champion after having beaten Tim Tszyu. Spence jumped in the ring and stated that he wanted Fundora next. There were suggestions that a fight could take place in October. No date was announced while Spence was undergoing changes in his camp. He is no longer with his trainer, Derrick James. Meanwhile, James has also sued Spence for unpaid wages relating to the Crawford fight.
Another alternative is to move up to 160. There are big fights available, with title fights possibly being against Carlos Adames (WBC), Erislandy Lara (WBA), and Janibek Alimkhanuly (WBO). But if he does not return, Spence has hinted at a role as promoter. He has signed Frank Martin under his management company.
Spence’s Future
Spence attended the presser for Martin’s fight with Gervonta Davis. Spence backed Martin to cause an upset. But that never happened, as Davis stopped Martin. However, looking back, Spence was happy with the experience he had. This is particularly true given that he felt his two car crashes did impact his boxing career, even if that cannot be used as an excuse for his loss to Crawford.
“But I like the promoter side. I feel like it might be my calling a little bit, being a promoter and looking at the young guys coming up and helping them get to the top of their level, because that’s where we at right now. He [Martin]’s at the top right now, and once he’s at the top, you’re the man,” Spence said
“A lot of people take it lightly just because I came back and fought and all that but that’s serious stuff. It’s not too many people that go high speed in a Ferrari and get thrown from a Ferrari, land on solid concrete and still be here to talk today, still survive, still be coherent and everything. That was traumatic and a brutal experience that I went through…I’ve [always] been rating him (Crawford) high, I’ve rated him super high. It definitely wasn’t my night, but you know I definitely want to get that back,” Spence stated
