Ennis Wants Crawford, Mosley Warns Tank Davis Over Crawford

1 year

Jaron Ennis, the IBF mandatory to Terence Crawford, is keen on facing the new undisputed welterweight champion next.
Crawford created history by becoming undisputed in two-weight classes by stopping Errol Spence Jr. in the ninth-round in a performance that included three knockdowns.
The post-fight comments by Crawford suggested that he was interested in targeting Jermell Charlo at 154, which would rule out a fight with Ennis.
Crawford’s Comments
“That could happen because we’re at the same weight class, but at this point in time, I’m looking for bigger & better opportunities, like [Jermell] Charlo,” Crawford
Not only that, but a talk of a Spence rematch also followed as the ‘Truth’ desired to run things back.
In addition, Tim Bradley warned Ennis about taking on Crawford by suggesting that he should face tougher opposition before even thinking about taking on a fighter like this. Nevertheless, Ennis made it clear that he was ready for the big fights.
Ennis’ Response
“I can’t wait to take they cheese. I just keep saying that; keep doubting me. We love it all. When we take your cheese, keep that same energy.
“Don’t try to switch sides, saying, ‘Ah, I always knew he could do it.’ No, I ain’t trying to hear none of that. Stay where y’all at. I see everything. “Definitely, that’s the first option. I want that now,” Ennis
However, in reality, facing Ennis does nothing for Crawford’s legacy. ‘Boots’ offers Crawford no belt, given that Bud has conquered the welterweight division.
In addition to this, from a strategic point of view, waiting for Crawford to move up to 154 may make more sense for Ennis. Should Crawford move up, then Ennis would become the full IBF champion by default.
Therefore, Ennis could become champion without taking such a risk. And, better yet, still have the best fights at welterweight without Crawford being there.
Regardless of what Ennis decides to do next, he has placed himself in a good position. And there is no getting away from that.
Mosley On Crawford Vs. Davis
Much in the same way, Shane Mosley has questioned the talk of a super fight between Gervonta Davis and Crawford.
Tank Davis is looking for a huge fight following his release from prison. Davis was apprehended for breaking the terms of his house arrest in relation to a hit-and-run incident.
Facing Crawford, however, may be problematic. Davis campaigns at lightweight, while Crawford’s last fight against Spence was at 147.
Therefore, Tank would have to move up two-weight classes in order to make it happen. Weight classes exist for a reason, as a move up to a division is often compensated by a reduction of power or speed later down the line.
This was seen when Mikey Garcia took on Spence. Garcia moved up from 135 to 147, and yet, his status as a four-division champion did not do anything.
Mikey exhibited a lack of power and speed, as Spence battered his opponent for 12 rounds in a unanimous-decision win, as Garcia was never the same.
With that being said, Mosley warned Davis about making such a move.
“If Gervonta Davis goes to ’47 now and tries to fight Bud Crawford, I think that Crawford will probably, maybe stop him. If Gervonta Davis takes some time to fill into the weight at ’47, it could be a different fight, but I still say Crawford wins.
“I mean, they say that Gervonta Davis is really big, he walks around pretty big, so he could actually do it. But I mean, Crawford’s arms are too long, he’s a little taller but he has power, he has his speed, he switch-hits,” Mosley
Mosley On An Upset
Realistically, Crawford is entering into the latter stages of his career. Fights with Jermell Charlo, or Tim Tszyu, at 154 are more appealing, giving him the chance to become undisputed in a third-weight class.
As for Davis, mega fights with Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson are more likely, given they are in and around his weight class.
Nevertheless, Mosley recognised that fighters can pull off the unthinkable.
“I think that Crawford would have the big edge in that fight. But, like I did it; I jumped from lightweight to welterweight to fight Oscar De La Hoya, and I was successful.
“But the difference with that is, I was actually bigger than Oscar in the Olympics. I was 139 to his 132, so I was really a big fighter anyway. Gervonta Davis is coming from ’26, from ’30, [so] it’s a little different,” Mosley
Crawford and Davis are huge names in their respective weight classes. Although Crawford has the belts to his name, Davis’ reputation as the cash cow in boxing cannot be ignored. And if Davis does end up adding some big titles to his name, then that will only increase his pulling power.
