Du Plessis Calls Strickland A 'Hypocrite' Over His Comments

Dricus du Plessis has reacted to Sean Strickland about his childhood abuse after their recent altercation.

Du Plessis and Strickland are set to face each other on January 20th, 2024, at UFC 297. Strickland will make the first defense of his title, which he picked up after beating Israel Adesanya. The pair were involved in a hostile pre-fight presser as Du Plessis brought up Strickland’s childhood troubles.

“You think your dad beat the s**t out of you? Your dad doesn’t have s**t on me … every childhood memory you have is going to come back when I’m in there with you,” Du Plessis said

Strickland responded by punching Du Plessis when both men attended Leon Edwards’ welterweight title defense against Colby Covington. Security intervened to evict Strickland, but the middleweight champion revealed all in the aftermath. During his attendance on the Theo Von podcast, Strickland stated:

Strickland’s Comments

” I tried to f***ing ignore it. I was boiling whenever Dricus (Du Plessis) goes on there and he jokes about that s**t. Dude, you have no idea. I’ll f***ing kill you. You have no idea. I think the issue is too, when you’re a kid and you’re made to be a victim your whole life, as an adult, you’re like never again. I’ll f***ing kill you.

“I’m so happy they didn’t get it from a right angle, I bit him. I s**t you not. Whenever he went into me, I remember at that moment, he tackles me and right there, you see my head goes up towards him, I started thinking how can hurt this man? I’m going take a f***ing chunk out of him. I’m going to bite his f***ing ear off. I remember telling myself at that moment, ‘Sean, you can’t do that, that’s something you can’t walk away from.’ If you do that, then I’m going to jail,” Strickland stated

Du Plessis Reacts

The South African responded by hitting back at the fighter. He questioned Strickland’s response of hitting him, given that he had experienced childhood trauma at the hands of his father. Strickland recalled his father being violent towards his mother. This was to the point where Strickland called the police on his father. Du Plessis was unhappy since Strickland’s violent reaction was the same thing he was against.

“Do I think he’s a hypocrite? One-hundred percent. One-hundred percent. Obviously childhood trauma is something you can’t help, but if you know what it feels like to be the one on the receiving end of such trauma, don’t inflict it on others, because that’s exactly what he does. So yes, I feel bad for him and I don’t think any kid deserves that, ever,” Du Plessis revealed
