Does The Boxing Establishment Want Usyk To Lose?

Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury do battle in their December 21 rematch, but is the boxing establishment against the Ukrainian?

Usyk came out victorious in the first fight via a split decision to become the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion. The victory solidified his position as one of the best heavyweights ever. He became undisputed in a second weight class, taking his undefeated record to 22-0. The manner of the victory was also historic, given what Ukraine is going through with the Russian war.

Usyk also overcame a significant weight advantage, giving up 40 pounds. He also had an eight-inch reach disadvantage. The Ukrainian was arguably robbed of a stoppage win in round nine after the referee imposed a standing eight count instead, just when Usyk was going for the finish.

Usyk Vs. Fury

The scorecards also did not fully reflect Usyk’s dominance. Usyk controlled the early and the latter part of the fight. Fury’s success came in the middle rounds. The Gypsy King created the narrative that Usyk got the victory because of Russia’s war with Ukraine. Fury also rewatched the fight, saying that Usyk was an amateur boxer. The boxing promoters have given their picks for who will come out victorious. Frank Warren understandably backed Fury since he is his fighter.

Eddie Hearn, who has long been a critic of Tyson Fury, has decided to pick the Gypsy King. This is despite Hearn stating that it was very difficult to beat Usyk, especially if he has already beaten you. His pick was even more extraordinary given that Usyk has already defeated Anthony Joshua in two fights. But his comments could be due to his desire to make the Joshua-Fury fight. Turki Alalshikh, who is ultimately organizing the event, also wants Fury to come out victorious. His primary motivation is to set up a trilogy fight. Here were the reactions from Warren, Hearn and Turki Alalshikh.

Picks

“So his [Tyson’s] adjustment, what he’s got to do is make sure he doesn’t get clipped, that’s really it. But it’s heavyweight boxing and as they get older, they get a little bit slower, that’s what happens. Tyson has got to continue doing what … he did in rounds three to seven. He was so dominant in those rounds and that’s what he’s got to do, keep doing that. Tyson will steal the show,” he said. “I think Tyson will stop him,” Warren said

“If Fury wins – and I’m actually leaning towards him, I’ve had a little bit of a [switch] – Fury could fight AJ [Anthony Joshua] for the unified world heavyweight title. The biggest fight ever in the sport. Wembley, Riyadh, wherever,” Hearn stated

“Hello freak. We are ready for you, there is space in our kitchen for one rabbit more. “You are destroying my map, I want the third fight, I want the trilogy,” Turki Alalshikh revealed
