Devin Haney Is Open To A 'Mega-Fight' With Ryan Garcia

Devin Haney is open to fighting Ryan Garcia following his win over Regis Prograis.

Haney became the new WBC junior welterweight champion with a dominant showing in front of his hometown. It was Haney’s first fight at 140 after moving up from lightweight following his undisputed accomplishments. Haney was comfortable, dropping Prograis in the fight, against someone who had 24 knockouts in their 29 wins.

Following the fight, Ryan Garcia called out the American by expressing his desire to fight in 2024. Their current record is 3-3, having faced each other in the amateurs six times. But given that the professional game is different, there is still an element of the unknown. But with both fighters onboard, fans could see it play out.

Haney Vs. Garcia

“I can’t wait to get it active with him. Haney is Good no doubt but I know him all to[o] well and I will beat him. Good stuff tonight congrats but this year we are going to run it!!!” One thing is certain in my eyes is that Haney and I will fight in 2024. You can hold me to it unless it’s not in God’s will,” Garcia said

“I think that’s a possibility. That’s a mega-fight. You know, I been calling out Ryan for years now, so it’s good to hear that, you know, he finally wanna fight. It sucks that it came after, you know, he took a ‘L,’ but it was only a matter of time. But now he finally wanna, you know, call me out. But at the end of the day, it’s still a big fight and like I said, I’m willing to make the … I wanna make the best fights, biggest fights happen,” Haney stated

Prograis After The Haney Loss

As for Prograis, the 34-year-old had no plans on hanging up his gloves. The two-time world champion still had aspirations to win another belt. The easiest path for Prograis to achieve this would be against Rolando Romero. The WBA champion is arguably the weakest from the belt holders: Haney, Teofimo Lopez and Subriel Matias.

And yet, that fight is unlikely to happen. Prograis does not sell big PPV numbers, while Romero likely wants a lucrative fight against Ryan Garcia. That is why Prograis has plans outside of boxing once he retires, with an eye on MMA.

“Something I did have in mind, maybe it might be too soon right now, but I do wanna leave the sport and do MMA. I wanna do that, but I do wanna be a three-time champion before I do that. Three-time at 140 and then after that I do wanna go ahead and switch to MMA. But three-time champion first…I’m not saying Imma do MMA now, but after I get a belt for the third time, then I’ll probably go ahead and switch. But no, not right now,” Prograis stated
