Devin Haney Announces His Comeback

Devin Haney has announced his return to boxing, subject to an opponent being announced.

Haney’s last foray into a boxing ring took place in April last year against Ryan Garcia. He suffered the first loss of his career, coming out second best via a majority decision. He hit the canvas three times in a major upset. But the result became a no-contest once Garcia’s system showed he had failed VADA tests for Ostarine. Haney kept his undefeated record, but his brand suffered massively. He vacated his WBC Junior Welterweight Title rather than go through with facing his mandatory Sandor Martin.

Haney’s Return

Only Top Rank showed an interest in that fight, making the sole purse bid. There was a perception that Haney had been exposed as not being the defensive genius that he was made out to be. The Dream took some time to regroup. He has been back in training, working on defending against the left hook in case he does rematch Garcia. There are also questions about which weight class he will complete in. He could stay at 140 or move up to 147 to chase a title in a third weight class. Either way, Haney confirmed his return.

Haney should arguably take a tune-up rather than jump straight back into the boxing ring against a big name. He will have been out for almost a year since the Ryan fight. The Garcia rematch is also not going to happen for the time being. Haney will be under pressure to perform, as boxers may now try to fight him on the front foot. Devin showed he struggled to keep Garcia off him when a similar-sized fighter put on the pressure. Haney has had the advantage of being much bigger than his opponents.

What’s Next?

He often rehydrates to around 160 pounds after making 140. But against Garcia, they were at a similar weight on fight night. Regis Prograis has reacted to Haney’s future. Prograis knows what it takes to be in the ring against Haney, having lost a unanimous decision against him in December 2023. The two-time world champion has warned Haney against pushing for the Ryan rematch. He felt Haney would not be able to compete and had been exposed by Ryan’s team. He urged The Dream to seek a tune-up in his next fight.

“He’s not shot, but I don’t think he’s going to beat Ryan. He got his ass whooped by Ryan, and that’s always going to be there. No matter what Bill says, that’s always going to be in the back of his mind. ‘Damn, he really beat me.’I don’t think they are, and I don’t think they should fight Ryan next. I think they should do a tune-up to see, and see how he [Haney] does and then go from there. The only way they would do that [fight Ryan next] is if they’re trying to cash out, and get a crazy amount of money,” Prograis said
