Derrick Lewis Arrested And Charged For Reckless Driving

UFC’s Derrick Lewis has suffered a setback after having been charged with reckless driving.

According to reports, the 38-year-old had been driving 150 miles per hour in a zone where the speed limit was 50. And to make matters even more noticeable, the MMA fighter had been driving in a red Lamborghini, while changing lanes in a manner that was deemed unsafe.

Lewis’ Arrest

The news arrives just when Lewis was preparing to take on Jailton Almeida at UFC Fight Night 231 on November 5th, 2023. And with ten days to go before then, Lewis found himself apprehended on October 25th, 2023.

The arrest was also following the fighter’s multi-fight deal with the UFC in the aftermath of his win over Marcos Rogerio de Lima.

The fighter is expected to attend court on December 27th, 2023, for a hearing. And if he is convicted, then Lewis could face 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $200. The news is likely to raise question marks over whether the fighter should continue in the sport.

After all, rumors have been constant about his retirement as the fighter has been vocal about his health issues in the past. The fighter recalled how he had fainted while trying to make weight in his bout against Serghei Spivac.

Lewis’ Health

“Yes, I still have it. The last few fights, I haven’t been healthy. The last fight, I actually passed out just before weigh-ins. I blacked out. My coaches had to carry me… make sure I stayed conscious. I just didn’t have the energy the rest of the week. What’s been going on is like, I wait until three days before weigh-ins, then try to start cutting weight. I cut like, 25 pounds in three days; just not eating and drinking water. For sure, there’s been a big adjustment,” Lewis said

However, at the age of 38, does the fighter need to be putting in the gruelling effort to make weight? And given that the apprehension has come on the eve of a big fight, does Lewis have the motivation moving forward? After all, the following comments were quite profound.

“It was a big eye-opener… I felt like I actually died. I was thinking of all the other fighters who went through something like that, they blacked out and came back, and they couldn’t fight… It was a good thing it happened at the PI. They gave me all the stuff I needed to get up and walk out of there. But it was a very scary moment though… I didn’t have no energy during the whole fight. I just felt like I was stretching,” Lewis

Ultimately, Lewis will be hoping that he can put this issue behind him as soon as possible. And once that is done, the focus will then return back to the octagon.

And with not too many fights left in a career that is in the latter stages, Lewis has to make the right moves going ahead. And there is no getting away from that.
