De La Hoya Talks Up Haney Vs. Garcia – ‘Let’s Break PPV Records’

Oscar De La Hoya has talked up a fight between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia as he praised the WBC junior welterweight champion.
Haney is coming off an impressive performance over Regis Prograis to become a two-weight world champion. He dominated in his first fight at the weight class. A fight with Gervonta Davis was entertained, but the failure to start negotiations meant Haney moved on. Ryan Garcia has since then been in contact with team Haney over making a fight. Both sides are keen on getting the fight made. De La Hoya wanted to put on a show to break PPV records as Haney responded in kind.
Haney And De La Hoya
A fight with Davis is off for now, which is why Haney’s focus is on Garcia. Their amateur record stands at 3-3, making another fight likely to settle the rivalry. Garcia is also coming off a win in his first fight under Derrick James. He stopped Oscar Duarte in the eighth round, showing he was more comfortable at 140 pounds.
A fight in Saudi Arabia is something Haney is open to. He attended the ‘Day of Reckoning’ card, which went down a treat. Out of the eight fights, six of them were by stoppages. Haney’s Islamic background is a key reason why he wants to fight there, as a Garcia fight could no doubt be made in the region.
“We’re in negotiations and my dream is to fight here in Saudi. If not that fight, any fight happen here. We’re still negotiating. If we can come to terms, maybe. Nah, if he wanted to fight me, the fight would get made,” Haney said
Haney Vs. Lopez
If the fight with Garcia does not happen, a unification fight with Teofimo Lopez is possible. Their rivalry has been well known since their days at 135 pounds, during which Lopez mocked Haney’s status as an email champion. Since then, both boxers have made history.
Lopez beat Josh Taylor, the former undisputed champion at 140, to become a two-weight/ lineal champion. That made him the WBO champion. Lopez takes on Jamaine Ortiz in his next fight, and provided that he comes through with that, Haney could be an option. Lopez Sr. has backed his son to beat Haney, whom he felt only had a jab as a key weapon.
“Once you get away from that jab, he’s f—— dead. We’re gonna knock that dude out. He won’t last six or seven rounds. My son is gonna figure out that jab. That’s all he has,” Lopez stated
