De La Hoya Says He Would Have KOed Mayweather With One Change
Oscar De La Hoya says he would have knocked out Floyd Mayweather had he had Floyd Mayweather Sr. in his corner.
De La Hoya lost a split decision, as Mayweather became the face of boxing. Oscar had Freddie Roach in his corner, but it was not enough to beat Mayweather as De La Hoya faded in the later rounds. Oscar felt his jab was not there, allowing Mayweather to dictate. But if Floyd Mayweather Sr. was there, things may have been different.
De La Hoya On Mayweather
“Knock him out. I would’ve knocked him out. Really. If I was one year younger and had Senior in my corner, I would’ve knocked him out. Absolutely. The key to that style, the Philly Shell, is a jab. It opens up all the doors. When my jab failed me, it was over. I knew it in my heart, in my head,” De La Hoya said
While De La Hoya may have come unstuck, he has outdone Mayweather as a promoter. He set up Golden Boy Promotions, which has become one of the leading promotional companies. It has built several PPV stars, such as Canelo Alvarez, Ryan Garcia and even Mayweather, during his earlier years. Although Mayweather helped create PBC, the brand has been suffering of late.
De La Hoya’s Success
Golden Boy is working closely with the Saudis, while PBC has been criticized for not putting on the biggest fights. Since their deal with Amazon Prime Video, they have not made a mega PPV event. The first was Tim Tsyzu vs. Sebastian Fundora. Canelo Alvarez vs Jamie Munguia followed, and Gervonta Davis took on Frank Martin. Those are big-name boxers, but the fights were seen as routine wins apart from the Fundora-Tsyzu bout.
The PPV numbers were also nowhere near the Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk numbers. That PPV bout did over a million buys across the globe, showing how far PBC is away from making the biggest bouts this year. Queensbury Promotions put on Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk. Meanwhile, Matchroom Boxing has helped create Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol, which will take place on October 12.
Leonard Ellerbe also left CEO of Mayweather Promotions in a massive shift for the company. Richard Schaefer has been appointed instead, but PBC has a long way to go before it competes with the rest. Mayweather was confident about the future of Mayweather Promotions moving forward.
“As we move forward, we are excited to announce that Mayweather Promotions will be joining forces with Richard Schaefer, a highly sought after finance expert and a phenomenal founder in the world of promotional boxing, with over forty years experience combined.
“Together, we will expand our presence by establishing Mayweather Headquarters in Los Angeles. Our goal is to elevate Mayweather Promotions to global success, supporting fighters worldwide and assisting them in making rewarding business decisions that will benefit them well beyond their boxing careers. We look forward to this new chapter and the continued global success of Mayweather Promotions,” Floyd Mayweather
