De La Hoya Recalls Being Abused, Ryan Garcia’s Future Revealed

Oscar De La Hoya opened up about his turbulent relationship with his mother, Cecilia, during his childhood.
This was revealed in the new HBO documentary entitled ‘The Golden Boy’ that aired on July 24th, 2023.
The Mexican recalled how playing stickball at the age of five got him on the wrong side of his mother.
Oscar revealed that he hit the ball and chased after it, only to narrowly miss being hit by a car as he lay under it.
But rather than being embraced by his mother, De La Hoya recalled something else.
“I end up in the bottom of the f—–’ car. For some miraculous reason I was untouched. I could see my mother running down the street. I was waiting for her to give me a hug. First thing she does is just hit me. Beats the crap of out me.
“My soul is out of my f—— body. I hated when she hit me. She was hitting me so much, she started crying…and she was angry because I wasn’t reacting to it. I was just numb at that point. I f—— hated it. It was the worst,” De La Hoya
Nevertheless, that simply became a motivating factor. Oscar went on to participate in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and walked away with a gold medal.
However, two years before that, the star’s mother had passed away with breast cancer. But given that her dying wish was for her son to bring back a gold medal, the realization of achieving it hit home.
“When I got home (from the Olympics), all I could think about was my mother. I just wanted to have a moment to feel it all but I couldn’t.
“When I would step inside the ring, I would picture my mom’s face on my opponent and I would just unleash it. I started to enjoy it. That was the scary part,” De La Hoya
Those moments did leave De La Hoya with regret as he admitted that he wished he could have done things differently if he had a second chance.
While that may have been the case, De La Hoya’s realization will go some way to repairing the painful memories that he went through.
“She was gone. I never had the courage to tell her I love her. I wish I did,” De La Hoya
De La Hoya On Garcia
De La Hoya has revealed his plans for Ryan Garcia moving forward.
The pair have not been on the best of terms following their recent lawsuit. Garcia claimed that his contract was not enforceable as it had been breached.
This was on the basis that his contract allegedly allowed him to box on any network on pay-per-view.
However, Garcia was apparently informed that his fight with Gervonta Davis would be put on DAZN. This was because of a separate agreement with Golden Boy Promotions.
That resulted in the current lawsuit, as Garcia was also unsatisfied by Oscar’s absence from the post-fight presser following his loss to Davis.
Although that may have been the case, it appears that De La Hoya is moving ahead as normal. After all, he recently claimed that he simply wanted Garcia to honor his contract.
“We have a lawsuit right now. I’m not suing him for money. He’s not suing me for money. I just want him to honor my contract. That’s it. Just honor the contract; that’s it.
“You have obligations. I want [Garcia] to fight, I want [Garcia] to be a legend. Do you think I wanted him to fight Tank Davis with a rehydration clause? Hell, no. I’m looking out for him, but he has people whispering in his ear.
“‘Oh, Oscar is bad. Oh, go with this other promoter, who will take care of you more. You’ll make more money.’ Well guess what? Ryan just made $30 million-plus dollars [for the Davis fight],” De La Hoya
With that being said, Oscar was keen on making Garcia have a tune-up fight at 140 pounds before targeting a mega bout.
“I’m not sure exactly what place they ranked him in the WBA, Ryan Garcia, but since all this is now taking place with Ohara and Romero, we have options for Ryan Garcia to bring him back, possibly in November, Maybe and then he can fight a mega-fight if he wants for January or February.
“If Ryan moves up to 140, this is my advice because people have to remember, I’ve been there, and I’ve done that. So if he’s moving up to 140, he should have a tune-up fight at 1 40. He should get his feet wet at 140,” De La Hoya
Ultimately, De La Hoya and Garcia have to do what is best for both of them. You can stay up-to-date with the latest happenings in the world of boxing by visiting boxingblitz right here.
