De La Hoya Confident Of Making Haney Vs. Garcia For March
Oscar De La Hoya is optimistic he can make Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia for March.
Both fighters are coming off wins in their last fight. Garcia stopped Oscar Duarte in the eighth round to mark his first win under Derrick James. Haney made history, dominating Regis Prograis to become the new WBC junior welterweight champion. The win also made him a two-weight world champion.
Since they both fought on DAZN, there is an increasing chance the fight gets made. The only other opponent of interest to both fighters is Gervonta Davis, but the fighter has shown a reluctance to engage in negotiations. De La Hoya was focused on making one of the biggest fights, with negotiations set to begin next week.

“We’re going to start the official negotiations [for Ryan Garcia vs. Dereck Haney] after this fight [Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Fredrick Lawson] this Saturday, and talk to whoever is in charge with Haney, and get this fight happening. I think this fight can easily get made. I think Haney’s father [Bill] and Devin, and very smart individuals who know what it takes to make a fight happen.
“We have to weigh a few factors into this. Haney is an amazing fighter. He just had an amazing outing with Prograis. We also have to take into consideration Ryan coming off the biggest PPV with Tank, and Ryan being a superstar. So, we have to weigh all that in, and just make it fair to everyone. As long as we’re fair to everyone, fights can be made. I’m hoping March would be ideal,” De La Hoya said
Garcia And Mayweather
Garcia’s relationship with De La Hoya and Golden Boy is at an all-time low. He is in a legal battle, claiming a breach of contract. De La Hoya responded by urging Garcia to honor his side of the agreement. Garcia then hit back by calling out De La Hoya and Hopkins in the pre-fight presser for the Duarte fight. The win silenced his critics, but since then, Garcia has been associating with Floyd Mayweather. They were stopped at a shopping mall, where Mayweather named Garcia one of the biggest stars in the sport.
Ryan [is] do[ing] crazy numbers. So, it’s up to him. Everything is up in the air, so whoever you want to fight. I mean [there are] some heavy hitters in the game right now…in boxing it’s only three…Canelo, Ryan, and Gervonta Tank Davis.
“In today’s time, fighters think they [have] belts, and they made a few million dollars, they are stars. That [doesn’t] make you a star. Being an allrounder all around the board makes you a star. Learn how to articulate. Know when to speak and when not to speak…everything plays a major role in making you a household name,” Mayweather said
That was followed up by them jogging together during the night, increasing speculation that Garcia could sign with PBC. Garcia’s contract reportedly ends within a year, meaning a Haney fight could be the best way to part terms, especially if it does big numbers.
