De La Hoya Chooses Dana White Over Canelo – ‘It Will Be Great To Hang Out’
Oscar De La Hoya has caused mass controversy by saying he will attend UFC 306 instead of Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga.
Both events take place on September 14 during Mexican Independence Weekend. Canelo has received mass criticism for the $89.99 PPV price, especially since the David Benavidez fight was not made. Canelo is expected to breeze past Berlanga, which has raised questions over the PPV prince.
Anthony Joshua vs. Daniel Dubois is now available to US fight fans for $19.95. That is a world title fight, allowing Joshua to pick up Dubois’ IBF belt. The winner will also get an undisputed heavyweight title shot, putting themselves in line to face the Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk rematch winner. De La Hoya felt he could not justify supporting Canelo’s fight because of a lack of value.
De La Hoya Boycott
“I’m choosing to attend the UFC and support Dana White tells you everything you need to know. Dana, I can’t wait to see you next Saturday buddy. I see that you got the same ab surgery that I got. I always knew you wanted to be like me bro. It will be great to hang out with you, face to face,” De La Hoya
Those comments have raised mass controversy for various reasons. Canelo-Berlanga will be on Amazon Prime Video and DAZN. De La Hoya has an agreement with DAZN as they are Golden Boy’s broadcasting partner. It would make sense for him to support the fight even if he is not on the best terms with Canelo. It also puts boxing in a bad light, as the sport has been criticized for not putting on the best fights, unlike the UFC.
Oscar has also been on bad terms with White. They first fell out after Oscar was against Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor. This was because he did not see it as a competitive fight. White hit back after De La Hoya entertained the idea of Canelo fighting McGregor. The CEO of the UFC has referenced De La Hoya’s prior drug problems, while Oscar called him out for slapping his wife at a New Year’s Eve party.
De La Hoya On PPV
There is also the suggestion that Oscar is taking things personally. He and Canelo almost squared up to each other at the Jaime Munguia presser. Alvarez accused Oscar of trying to steal money from him, and Oscar filed a lawsuit for defamation. Now, Oscar has continued to double down on his dislike for Canelo.
“We’re away from the boxing match that nobody asked for and the UFC event that everybody will be watching. Canelo is fighting Berlanga, another snoozefest. They’re trying to sell a PPV for $90 at a $500 minimum in person. It’s just robbery at this point to pay for another lame Canelo that always goes the distance against a sub-par opponent. I love the sport of boxing more than anything, and I will be watching boxing matches anywhere,” De La Hoya said
