De La Hoya Calls Haney A 'Shot Fighter'

Oscar De La Hoya has described Devin Haney as a shot fighter.

Haney took on Ryan Garcia in April, where he was dropped three times on his way to a majority decision loss. However, the result became a no-contest after Garcia failed VADA tests for Ostarine, meaning that Haney remained undefeated. But Haney’s commercial value has suffered since then. Only Top Rank made a purse bid for his WBC mandatory defense against Sandor Martin at 140. Haney would vacate that belt as he turned his attention elsewhere. He recently returned to training but filed a lawsuit against Garcia and Golden Boy Promotions.

He accused Garcia of fraud, battery and unjust enrichment while naming Golden Boy Promotions in the lawsuit. Haney is reportedly wanting to do an audit to ensure that he received 47% of what he was owed from the fight. Haney has received criticism for not leaving the Garcia episode behind him and moving on with his career.

De La Hoya On Haney

Haney ultimately agreed to a $1.5 million fine, which Garcia paid after he missed the 140-pound limit. Since the fight went ahead, there has been a perception that Haney should focus on getting back to winning ways. His father, Bill Haney, came out to state that his son’s lawsuit would continue to stand, resulting in De La Hoya firing back. He has now said that Haney is no longer the fighter who became a two-weight world champion.

“How can you sue somebody that beat the crap out of you? It doesn’t make sense. No. What I would do is call that fighter out back in the ring and beat his a**. I don’t think so because I believe Devin Haney is a shot fighter,” De La Hoya said

There is a perception that Haney may suffer, especially since fighters now know that they could get to him if they decide to walk him down. His defense was exposed for the first time against a fighter who had similar skills. Although there is the potential to run things back with Garcia, the latter has said he is not interested in the fight. But it is still the biggest fight out there, as Garcia has recently returned to training.

Garica’s Return

The boxer has said he wants a tune-up before he eyes the biggest fights. Reports indicate that he could take an exhibition fight in Japan. Garcia was on hand to see Manny Pacquiao have his exhibition against  Rukiya Anpo this year. De La Hoya has said that he met Garcia for a meeting. He advised the boxer on how to bounce back strongly, especially given his own experiences with substance abuse and issues outside the ring. De La Hoya was confident that Garcia would be back in a good place.

“First things first. We’ve got to get Ryan back to the place where he belongs, and that’s in the gym. I saw him right now; he’s in great spirits. He’s doing awesome and he’s focused. What has happened in the past, he’s learned. He’s grown as a young man. “I gave him a good nice speech about my experiences and how I’ve been through hell and back. I’m a man with the experience that can tell this young man, ‘It’s okay,” De La Hoya stated
