De La Hoya And Canelo Almost Trade Blows At Presser

Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Alvarez almost traded blows during the pre-fight presser for the Jamie Munguia fight.

Alvarez defends his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title on May 4 against Munguia, who De La Hoya represents. The tensions between De La Hoya and Canelo have clouded the pre-fight build-up. Both no longer see eye-to-eye, with Alvarez stating he does not intend to reconcile. Things got more personal at the presser, with De La Hoya reminding Alvarez of his role in his career. Under Golden Boy, Canelo secured the big fight with Floyd Mayweather. While he came up short, it put Canelo on the biggest stage. De La Hoya took his time to remind Canelo of that.

De La Hoya Reacts

“He seems to have trouble remembering who helped him become a true global star. To be clear, I have nothing but respect for Canelo as a fighter. His record and ability speak for themselves. But he has spent much of the last two months insulting me rather than promoting this fight,” De La Hoya said

Tensions grew, with Canelo angered by the comments. Alvarez accused De La Hoya of stealing money from him in relation to the GGG fight, saying he had proof. Oscar hit back, stating this was defamation. Things escalated further as both men had to later be separated, stating they were ready to throw punches if it came to it.

Canelo Responds

“I was ready, clenched fists and all. Obviously, he’s not going to do anything. He’s got a fight Saturday. He can’t take the truth. A fighter like that can’t have me around because the attention is diverted off him. He hates that. I know how to get under his skin,” De La Hoya

“He insulted me and I don’t want to permit that. I will [punch him]. If he came closer, I punch him…If he came really close to me,. I’d punch him in that situation,” Canelo

De La Hoya admitted that his comments were designed to get under Canelo’s skin. The aim was to distract the fighter from the job at hand. He felt Canelo was no longer the same and that age would catch up with him. Alvarez responded emphatically, promising to stop Munguia.

“OK, wow, you’re getting mad because I wasn’t with you when you fought Mayweather, your biggest fight, where you got embarrassed? Guess what, I was taken to rehab. So you’re putting your foot on my neck when I’m down? OK, guess what? Enough is enough. And this is a perfect moment, because, did I get in his head? Yes, absolutely,” De La Hoya

“I’m gonna be so happy that night. You will see,” Canelo
