Davis Vs. Roach, Benavidez vs. Hart Could Feature On A Dec 21 Card
Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach and David Benavidez vs. Jesse Hart could feature on a December 21 card.
Davis and Benavidez were on the same card when Tank headlined against Frank Martin. This card would go up against the Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk rematch, making this a risky move. Davis knocked him out to defend his WBA Lightweight Title. Meanwhile, Benavidez defeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk in his first fight at 175 to become the WBC Interim Light Heavyweight Champion.
Davis is looking for another win, which could set up a unification against Shakur Stevenson sometime next year, provided the latter heals from his hand injury. Roach is 25-1-1 but has only ten knockouts, making Davis a massive favorite. Roach has won six in a row since his defeat to Jamel Herring, but he would be moving up from 130 to take this fight.
Benavidez’s Next Fight
Benavidez was linked with a fight against David Morell Jr. next after confirming that talks were underway. His win over Gvozdyk put him in a mandatory position for the winner of Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev, who will box on October 12 for the Undisputed Light Heavyweight Champion. Benavidez has already stated that he wants to face the Cinco de Mayo winner. However, that would require him to stay active.
Meanwhile, Morrell is also coming off his first victory at 175 pounds after moving up from 168. He was defeated by a unanimous decision to take his record to 11-0. This includes nine knockouts, making him one of the most destructive punchers in the division. Morrell and Benavidez have exchanged verbals throughout the last couple of years, with both sides accusing each other of not wanting to fight.
“We’ve been talking for the last year, and we wanted to make the fight. We had November 25th, and we were ready to go. He [Morrell] knocked out [Yamaguchi] Falcão, and he [Benavidez ran for the hills. That’s what happened. We don’t have to do it anymore.
“If he [Benavidez] doesn’t fight Canelo, everybody in boxing wants to see this fight. The fans aren’t stupid. They know this is the guy. Read the comments. The people that pay to watch the fights. 80% of the people got this guy as the winner [against Benavidez]. Why do you think they’re avoiding us? Because they’re afraid. ‘I’ll go up to 175 and fight Bivol.’ That’s what he said,” Morrell’s manager Decubas said
Is It The Right Move?
However, since neither of them could get the Canelo Alvarez fight at 168, they now have an opportunity to face each other to settle who is the best. Morrell is also the WBA Interim Light Heavyweight Champion, meaning the winner will have a stronger claim to getting the title shot next. Benavidez was hoping that he could have a positive announcement soon.
“Cooking up something big for y’all for my next fight. Stay tuned. If everything goes right and he accepts, [David] Morrell,” Benavidez stated
However, reports indicate that is no longer the case. The Mexican Monster has stated that he will not fight Morrell, with Hart being next. Hart is 31-3 with 25 knockouts. He has lost against the top names, coming second best to Joe Smith Jr. and Zurdo Ramirez on two occasions. But this is by far his biggest test.
