Davis Set To Become Champion As Haney Vacates, Lopez Aims For Crawford Fight

Gervonta Davis is set to become a two-weight world champion after Devin Haney relinquished his lightweight titles.
As of now, Davis is the current WBA regular champion at 135 pounds. Therefore, Haney’s decision to move up to 140 to take on Regis Prograis has left the belt vacant now that he has given it up.
“I did everything at 135 that I could. The biggest fight for me was making that Gervonta Davis fight, and his side showed no interest in making the fight. I’ve outgrown the division, so now I make my quest to 140 to become a two-division champion [against WBC light welterweight champion Regis Prograis on December 9th]. And after this fight, I look to become a three-division champion and move up to 147, [if] I’m successful in this fight [against WBC 140-lb champion Prograis,” Haney said
Davis To Be Champ
As such, Davis will be elevated to the status of a full WBA world champion. The move would make Tank a two-division champion after his feats at super-featherweight. That move could be vital for Tank’s desire to secure the biggest fights. After his recent release from prison, there were question marks over where Davis would go next. But a belt could open up doors. Fights against Shakur Stevenson and Vasiliy Lomachenko could now open up. The former is the current WBC lightweight champion, while the latter is a three-division champion.
Outside of Davis, Teofimo Lopez is also aiming for big things. The Takeover has expressed his desire to face Terence Crawford after the recent news that he rejected an offer to face Ryan Garcia. Lopez turned down the offer on the grounds that the purse was not high enough. This was particularly since he has spoken about his aspirations for fighting for nine-figure purses.
Lopez Wants Crawford
Therefore, as an alternative, Crawford’s name has cropped up. Bud is a big name after having defeated Errol Spence Jr. to become the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era. But in doing so, he was targeting a fight with Canelo Alvarez to become undisputed for a third time at a different weight. As such, a Lopez fight would do nothing for his legacy, but everything for the Takeover’s standing.
“Crawford, me and Crawford. If it comes. I love challenges. I love it. How else am I going to learn? How else am I going to be great? Besides, I’m the first male to become two-time undisputed…That’s all it is. It’s not like I’ve got some animosity, Crawford, it depends on his team. It’s not like I want to be [undisputed].
“I am [in make believe], and he [Terence Crawford’ is [used to be before being stripped of IBF 147-lb title]. We’re not too far away…My father would love for me to do that, and that’s just who we are. I get to test myself again. I love that. I get to see how much more that I can go. How much more can I do?” Lopez
