Davis Out Of Jail, What’s Next?

Gervonta Davis has been released from prison, as the lightweight attempts to get his career back on track.

The star secured the biggest win of his career when he beat Ryan Garcia with a seventh-round TKO win. And in the process of doing so, Davis became the ‘face of boxing.’

However, the star was put under house arrest for 90 days in relation to a hit-and-run incident, as well as being required to do three years worth of probation and 200 hours of community service.

Davis’ Violation

This required him to stay at his coach Calvin Ford’s house. Those terms were not abided by as Davis bought a house worth $3.4 million, as well as having stayed at the ‘Four Seasons hotel.

As such, Davis was sent to jail to serve the remainder of his sentence. Things also got worse by virtue of the fact that Davis was robbed on the same day that he was arrested on June 2nd, 2023.

Thereafter, Davis lashed out at the judge from prison.

“This judge is crazy. This judge is… they seen I bought a property. I did everything in my power to listen to my lawyers. I listened to everyone to a ‘T.’ She’s mad that I brought a property. That’s why I’m sitting in jail.

“She wanted me to be in an apartment… a one-(bedroom) apartment. I couldn’t take that. She wanted me to stay in a one-(bedroom) apartment where I couldn’t have my kids or nothing and things like that.

“I wanted to shed some light on this situation. She’s taking advantage of me and she’s doing stuff that’s not right to me. I just had to shed light on this situation,” Davis

Davis’ Future

But now that he is out, Davis is looking to get back to what he does best: boxing.

Major fights with Devin Haney or Shakur Stevenson could follow now that he has been released.

However, before that happens, it is most likely that Davis will have a tune up to make sure that he is in shape.

But moving forward things are looking a whole lot better for Davis. And one fight that could happen is Haney vs. Davis.

The former recently made it clear that facing ‘Tank’ is the biggest fight out there. However, one problem that could emerge is the issue of a rehydration clause.

Davis has made it a customary thing, having put it in against Ryan Garcia at 135 lbs, when the latter favored fighting at 140.

However, doing this against Haney would be impossible. The ‘Dream’ has already stated that he would not fight Davis with such a clause since he is a naturally bigger fighter.

“I wouldn’t, and I couldn’t do a rehydration clause. I’m the man with the belts; I’m the man with the hardware. A rehydration clause is something I wouldn’t do,” Haney

Not only that, but the question of who is the A-side could derail things. Davis may be the ‘cash cow’ in the division, but Haney is the undisputed lightweight champion.

But if the fight did go ahead, then one man has backed Davis to beat Haney: Terence Crawford.

Such a prediction was a major shift, given that the WBO welterweight champion had initially backed Haney to win.

However, given the Dream’s performance against Vasiliy Lomachenko, Bud has changed his mind.

The majority of the boxing community felt that Loma was denied a win. In addition, the manner in which Haney was getting hit raised some concerns.

“I always said Devin would beat Tank, you know what I mean, but the way Lomachenko was landing them left hands on Haney… it’s gonna be kind of tough for Haney to win getting hit like that from Tank. But styles make fights,” Crawford said

Davis Vs. Haney

If the fight with Haney does not materialize, then Frank Martin is ready to step up.

The latter faces Artem Harutyunyan in a WBC lightweight title eliminator on July 15th, 2023.

And if he comes out victorious, Martin would throw himself into the hat for the biggest fights. After all, Martin is currently undefeated who wants all the smoke.

“I feel like I’m ready for Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson. I’m ready for em,” Martin

Ultimately, Davis has plenty of options moving forward. The star is in a position to command the fights he chooses, having become a box office attraction.

And his recent prison sentence will only go on to increase the anticipation to see him return now that he is out.

A speculator performance is exactly what he needs to remind the division what they have been missing.

As a result, given Davis’ knockout power, that is something that fans can expect.

So the question remaining is can Davis deliver? Time will tell how it all plays out moving forward.
