David Morrell Jr. Vs. Sena Agbeko Breakdown

David Morrell Jr. takes on Sena Agbeko on December 16th, 2023, in Showtime’s final card in boxing.
Morrell Jr. arrives at the fight as the heavy favorite. He is undefeated with a 9-0 record, which includes eight KOs. The current WBA regular champion’s last fight was a stoppage win over Yamaguchi Falcao. A victory for Morell puts him one step closer to targeting a super fight with David Benavidez.
His opponent, Agbeko, was meant to fight Morrell in his last fight. However, the boxer had issues with his licence, which meant that Falcao stepped in. Agebeko fought last month as he stopped Bruno Romay in only two rounds. With that being said, here is a breakdown of what fans can expect.
Morrell Vs. Agbeko
Morrell Jr. is seen as the most-avoided fighter at 168. He is heavy-handed, but he needs a big name on his resume. Agebeko will pose a severe test since he’s a big puncher. His record stands at 28-2, with 22 wins coming through knockout. He is physically imposing, but his height and reach falls short compared to Morrell.
Agebeko is 6 ft while Morrell is 6-1. Agebeko has a 74.5-inch reach, while Morrell has a 78-inch reach. That will prove problematic for Agebeko since he must close the distance to attack Morrell. But in doing so, he is likely to walk into the power shots, as Falcao found out.
Morrell’s first test was meant to be Alantez Fox. But the Cuban had him in dire trouble in the third round before he ended proceedings in the fourth to make a significant statement. Fox was taller at 6ft 4 and had a reach advantage of 79 inches. The win showed that Morrell could deal with closing the distance.
Things To Watch For
Morrell would also give Aidos Yerbossynuly his first-career defeat with a knockout victory. On paper, Agebeko is seen as Morrell’s most challenging fight. He also possesses power, but don’t let that fool you. His jab is used to keep his opponents off balance, while his footwork is vital for him to get out of range. He will have to do this, as Morrell is the bigger guy.
Agebeko’ ability to go the distance was also shown against Isaiah Steen. Agebeko showed a lot of patience as he slipped his opponent’s shots and made Steen pay by countering him as he came on the inside. Since Morrell has never gone the distance, there are questions over his stamina which could be answered in this fight.
But Agebeko’s weaknesses show when he steps back. As the boxer moves into a defensive position, he often lowers his hands. If Morrell can close the gap and let off combinations, it could be an early fight for Agebeko. The latter’s footwork has improved, but will it be enough to stop Morrell from cutting the ring off? Time will tell how it all plays out moving forward.
