Dana White Wants Aspinall To Face Winner Of Jones Vs. Miocic - 'He’s The Best'

Dana White hopes to see Jon Jones take on Tom Aspinall in a huge heavyweight clash.

The pair have been linked with a clash for some time. Aspinall staked his claim to the fight by knocking out Curtis Blaydes in the first round at UFC 304. Before the fight, White said the winner of this bout would face either Jones or Stipe Miocic. Those two are expected to fight this year once Jones returns from injury. Bones is reluctant to take that fight with suggestions that he is ducking.

He has said the Alex Pereira fight is much bigger, earning him more money and doing more for his legacy. Pereira has also said he would be open to moving up to be a heavyweight to make that fight.
There are also suggestions that the winner of Jones-Miocic could retire, which would prevent fans from seeing the Aspinall fight.

White Reacts

UFC fans already missed out on the Francis Ngannou fight. The Predator left the UFC last year to sign with the PFL. Since then, he has only had two boxing bouts, as questions remain over his UFC future. White has also ruled out the idea of doing a co-promotion with the PFL, leaving a Jones-Aspinall fight as the biggest to be made.

“If both retire? That’ll suck. That’ll suck. I don’t know what we’ll do if that happens. Jon Jones is no dummy. Jon Jones has a very high fight IQ. He knows what Aspinall’s got and what he’s about. I think we’re going to have to see what happens in this fight with Stipe, see where Jon’s head is.

“Or, if Stipe wins, see where his head is and see what they want to do. Is it their last fight? Are they going to retire?I think if Stipe wins, he probably will (retire). But I think if Jon Jones wins, I just think that competitive spirit that he has and his desire to prove to the world that he’s the best (will make him fight),” White said

Will It Happen?

The pressure is on Jones to deliver. He backed Blaydes to beat Aspinall based on their first meeting. Before Aspinall injured his knee in the first Blaydes fight, Curtis landed on Aspinall with heavy shots. He did the same in their rematch, only for Aspinall to tag him with a big shot that set up the finish.

Tom also called out Jones in his post-fight comments, leaving the American with all the pressure going into the Miocic fight. Jones was out of the sport for three years before returning to beat Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 last year for the vacant heavyweight belt. That period of inactivity could be crucial. But the only way to know is to make the fight, which White wanted to see.

“When people are saying that (Aspinall) could possibly be the best ever. I think that’s the kind of [stuff] that fires Jon Jones up. There’s no doubt about it (that fight is getting bigger). There’s no doubt, whoever wins the fight between Jon Jones and Stipe, is a great fight for Aspinall,” White added
