Dana White: McGregor Could Return In The Summer To Face Chandler

In the latest MMA news, Dana White has given an update on when fans can expect to see Conor McGregor return to the cage.

The Notorious has been absent from MMA ever since his loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 during which he sustained a broken leg.

Ever since then, a fight with Michael Chandler had been teased only for the Irishman’s status with USADA to be under scrutiny.

The organization requires that fighters submit two negative samples over a sixth month period before they can compete. And given that McGregor had not done so, a return in 2023 was ruled out.

And that dispute did not go down well with USADA, as the following comments showed.

McGregor And USADA

“We have been clear and firm with the UFC that there should be no exception given by the UFC for McGregor to fight until he has returned two negative tests and been in the pool for at least six months. Despite a positive and productive meeting about a contract renewal in May 2023, the UFC did an about-face and informed USADA on Monday, October 9, that it was going in a different direction.

“The relationship between USADA and UFC became untenable given the statements made by UFC leaders and others questioning USADA’s principled stance that McGregor not be allowed to fight without being in the testing pool for at least six months,” USADA said

But since that moment, the Notorious has confirmed that he is back in USADA. This has led to question marks over when fans could expect to see McGregor.

There were suggestions that a return at UFC 300 could take place, given that it will be a historic moment for the UFC. However, moving forward, White could not give a definitive date.

Nevertheless, the CEO of the UFC did confirm that talks had taken place with McGregor in the hope of seeing him return to action in the summer. The following comments confirmed as much.

White On McGregor

“Talked to him yesterday, too. He’s good. He’s ready. He wants the [fight]. He’s gotta sit out the six months to get back into their drug testing pool. Realistically, we could be looking at him next summer,” White said

While Chandler is expected to be the opponent, there is always the chance that McGregor could face someone else. He has spoken about his desire to have a rematch with Nate Diaz and give the fans a trilogy.

Meanwhile, there is the question of where McGregor’s motivation lies. Is it simply a desire to return to the sport, or does he have some ambition of winning a world title? Either way, the Irishman is desperate to get back.

“I feel like I’ve been robbed of my livelihood. I’m not going to complain, but I’m ready! I wanted to announce the fight for Dec. 16, but that’s not going to happen. It doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. I’m going to keep doing my thing, so I’ll see you soon. Hopefully early next year,” McGregor stated
