Dalton Smith Drops Mathieu Germain 3 Times To Set Up Title Shot

Dalton Smith dropped Mathieu Germain three times on his way to a unanimous decision win: 117-107 and 119-105.
The victory solidified his position in the junior welterweight division, as he is now mandatory for the WBC Junior Welterweight Champion Alberto Puello. Smith started slow, although his intentions were clear when he missed with a right hand in the opener as he moved forward. He connected with a solid left hand in the second round that buzzed the Canadian. Germain also found some success with shots to the body in round two. However, he got a little careless when he threw a left hook that saw him get countered in return as he hit the canvas.
Smith Strikes
He was on unsteady legs, but luckily for Germain, the bell rang. Smith punished Germain in the third with a right hand upstairs, wobbling him once again. But the Canadian showed massive resolve to make it out of the round. Germain went on the defensive as he sought to recover from the punishment he had taken.
Smith targeted the body in the sixth round, landing solid left hands. Germain started to slow down but showed massive heart to stay in the fight.
Germain missed with a right hand as he was countered with a left to the body, forcing him to grimace in the eighth. Smith continued to walk Germain down, landing two left hands to send his man to the canvas. However, the referee deemed it a slip in a scare for the Canadian. After the end of the 10th, Smith’s corner told their man to up his pace.
Reaction
He responded by following up with a right hand behind his jabs to drop Germain in the 11th. Smith dropped Germain again with a shot to the body in the final round. Although Germain recovered to make it to the final bell, Smith gave a comprehensive performance.
“I want that world title next. I did what I had to do. … I needed those rounds. I’ve got the fitness. What I did in the 11th and 12th I probably should have done a little bit earlier, but it’s hard when someone’s running like that, pinning him down. We called this ‘the fight before the fight,’ and that’s it. There’s nothing that’s going to get in the way of him fighting for the world title, it’s just when. … I believe he’s a world champion in waiting. I believe the next time you see him fight will be for the world title,” Smith said
