Curmel Moton: Is He The Next Floyd Mayweather?
Curmel Moton has been dubbed the next Floyd Mayweather, as the boxing sensation works his way through the ranks.
Moton made his professional debut against Ezequiel Flores in September 2023. He boxed on the Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo undercard. Just as Mayweather had allowed Canelo to fight on his undercards, Moton was given a similar opportunity. He seized the opportunity with both hands, knocking out his opponent in the first round. Since then, he has taken his record to 6-0, with five knockout wins. He has also boxed on another big card: Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal.
Moton’s Rise
The Moton family is from Salt Lake City, Utah. Curmel wore a pair of boxing gloves when he was four. Two years later, he found himself in the boxing gym. He got his first taste of the boxing world when he lost in the National Silver Gloves 70-pound finals at 11. He took on Breishaun Johnson but came up short. Moton locked himself in a hotel bathroom with tears down his face. But that setback would fuel his promising future.
“Yeah, I was that young. That’s when I started to take boxing more seriously. I hate to lose, I mean I really hate to lose, and that loss (to Johnson) in the national finals when I was 11 set me off. I even remember the kid’s name. I would cry in the ring when I lost. When I was young, I did not know how to deal with losing. I learned then, after that national championship loss, how to deal with it. I just cried. I got myself together. My dad came and got me. I wasn’t about to show him I was crying,” Moton stated
Moton is just 18, but he has a good amateur pedigree. He has 18 amateur titles titles to his names since he decided to take up boxing in 2015. Things did not start all that well, as he lost his first amateur bout. But since then, he went on to win over 130 bouts. His amateur record is at 156-7. Moton has also learned from the very best.
His Potential
He has sparred with Gervonta Davis, with the latter praising his boxing skills. The same goes for Shakur Stevenson, who also talked up Morton. Other fighters he has worked with include Robeisy Ramirez, Duke Ragan, Keyshawn Davis, and Bruce Carrington. That will stand him in good stead moving forward. With Mayweather by his side, he has someone who can help him into a world title shot.

“I can handle the pressure. I’ve been putting work in my whole life and I’m used to it. I’ve been doing this since a little kid, so it’s nothing new to me. (Mayweather) said I’m going to be a future world champion. That’s the goal, to be the best in the sport one day. We’re going to keep working hard and we’re going to get there,” Moton said
Moton is expected to face Bryan Mercado in his next fight. If he comes out with another impressive win, Mayweather may seek to escalate his career with a title shot within the next two years. Boxing fans had plenty to say about his potential.
