Crawford: Clash With Canelo Tops Boxing’s Biggest Fights
Terence Crawford has said that a fight between him and Canelo Alvarez is the biggest bout in boxing.
Bud has been targeting the Mexican since he knocked out Errol Spence Jr. to become the first Undisputed Welterweight Champion of the four-belt era. The Spence rematch has failed, with neither side having agreed terms.
Crawford was frustrated by Spence’s claim that he performed poorly in the fight due to vision problems, which is why he underwent cataract surgery on his right eye. That has left Canelo as a possible target. A win over Alvarez makes Crawford a three-weight undisputed champion. It also allows him the opportunity to earn massive payday. With history on the line, Crawford saw no other fight eclipsing that.
Crawford On Canelo
“Terence Crawford vs Canelo Alvarez is the biggest fight in boxing right now. Like it or not it’s just the facts,” Crawford said
Nevertheless, not all boxing fans will agree. Canelo vs. David Benavidez is a bigger fight for the following reasons. They are both Mexicans, making it a mega fight ahead of Cinco De Mayo Weekend and Mexican Independence Day. Given how both fighters are at the top of their careers, it can potentially break PPV records.
Benavidez has been a WBC Interim Champion at 168 for around two years. Any further delays in making the order may increase the calls for Canelo to be stripped. Benavidez is also a natural 168-pounder or bigger, unlike Crawford. Since Canelo beat Jermell Charlo, who had moved up from 154 pounds so easily, getting Crawford to come up three weight classes and win will be a tough task. But he has been backed to beat Canelo.
Crawford vs Canelo
“It’s a tough task for Terence. But at the same time, I would back him. I would pick Terence Crawford to beat Canelo Alvarez, even at 168. I think that his skill level is up there with the greatest. [And] I don’t think we’ve seen anything like Terence Crawford.
“I do study history. I never seen anybody that has everything. Good speed, power, timing, can switch the way he switches. That has the toughest, the meanness that he has, the way he finishes guys, the way he breaks down guys. He’s one of the smartest guys that I’ve ever seen in the ring, right up there with Floyd Mayweather,” Tim Bradley stated
Crawford also faces a challenge from Jaime Munguia and Edgar Berlanga for getting that Canelo fight. Eddie Hearn has suggested the two as possible alternatives. Munguia is also an undefeated Mexican, making it an attractive fight. As for Berlanga, the American has worked his way up the ranks to take his record to 21-0, with 16 KOs showing that he is a credible opponent.
Canelo’s Options
“I think the Munguia fight is a great fight, I really do. I think the Benavidez fight is also a great fight, and also, I want my man, Edgar Berlanga, to do a really good job on February 24th and scream and shout and call that fight [Canelo] as well,” Hearn stated
