Crawford Back In Training, Bud Trashes Spence’s Record And More

In today’s online boxing news, Terence Crawford has confirmed that he is back in training following the recent news that Errol Spence Jr. has exercised his rematch clause.

Following Bud’s ninth-round stoppage of Spence to become the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era, there were question marks over whether the ‘Truth’ would run things back.

And now that he has done so, there are still outstanding issues over the weight class. Bud, by winning the first fight, has the right to determine the weight class.

Spence’s preference was to fight at 154, something which Bud was open towards. However, reports stress that Crawford has offered an ultimatum at 147.

That will leave Spence with some pondering to do as to whether taking a rematch is feasible. But in the meantime, Crawford is focused on his next fight which is expected to be Spence in December, as he gave clarity over the terms of the rematch.

Crawford On The Rematch

“He exercised his rematch [clause] and that’s the fight that’s supposed to happen next. We shall see how negotiations go. We supposed to fight in December, and yeah, I’m back in training…The contract states that either one or the other gotta notify in writing that he can no longer make the weight. If not, then the fight will be at 147. The contract states that it has to go at 47 since neither I or Errol notified each other stating that we can’t make the weight,” Crawford

If the fight does not happen, Crawford’s next target is likely to be the winner of Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo. The duo will face each other on September 30th, 2023, with Crawford potentially having the chance to face the winner for all the belts at 168. Victory here would make Bud undisputed in a third weight class and make him one of the best of all-time.

“Another fight for the undisputed, and then I walk away. Three times undisputed,” Crawford

Spence’s Record

And by the looks of it, Crawford has already talked up his credentials. The boxer hit out at Spence’s resume despite the latter being a former unified welterweight champion.

But when it comes to comparing his record against Bud, Spence has been found wanting. The boxer has not achieved undisputed success in any weight class, while he has also lost his undefeated record in the biggest fight of his career.

And the manner in which Crawford has gotten his wins has been impressive. Since moving up to welterweight, Crawford has stopped all of the opponents that he has faced.

This dismissed the narrative before the Spence fight that he had not fought anybody of note. In addition, it also removed concerns that he had beaten fighters when they were past their prime. That is why Crawford saw himself as a cut above the rest.

“There’s no comparison. When you compare Errol Spence to Terence Crawford, there is no comparison. My career, I’m already going to the Hall of Fame. If we retire right now, he’s not going to the Hall of Fame,” Crawford stated

Crawford On Spence’s Skills

As a result, Crawford dismissed Spence’s skills by outlining how his prior opponents had put up a much better performance against him.

Spence was ultimately dropped three times before his stoppage, but he himself had offered nothing of note to trouble Crawford. And given the narrative that Spence would be too big and powerful, Crawford dismissed his opponents fear factor.

“If you look at my fight with Errol Spence and how easily I defeated Errol Spence compared to all these guys [I fought in the past] that they were calling bums, that should tell them something right there. The guys you were calling bums put up a better fight than your favorite fighter. The fight was much easier than I thought it would have been,” Crawford

Crawford has put himself in the conversation for being one of the best of all time. And if he does manage to become undisputed in a third weight class, there is no denying that this feat will be almost impossible to match. So can he do it? Time will tell.
