Cormier Questions McGregor Vs. Chandler As A Headlining Event

In today’s MMA news, Daniel Cormier is not fully behind the idea of Conor McGregor headlining UFC 300 next year.

The ‘Notorious’ has been out of the cage since his loss to Dustin Poirier all the way back in 2021 at UFC 264. During the bout, McGregor broke his leg which has kept him out of the octagon for around two years.

Thereafter, the MMA fighter was being linked with a return to face Michael Chandler in 2023. But the failure to enrol in USADA in time meant that a fight was not possible this year.

However, following McGregor’s latest statement that he will enter USADA, the six-month period required to submit two negative samples would put him in line for a UFC 300 event. And yet, Cormier felt that was not ideal.

Cormier On McGregor

“People in the general public are so excited about Conor McGregor coming back, and I got to be honest with you: I feel like a lot of the hardcore fans are a little fed up with it. They just want to see him back. They’re tired of he’s back, he’s gone, he’s back. They want Conor McGregor back, and they want him back in a manner in which he’s consistent and he’s fighting frequently.

“But I don’t know if that’s going to be the case with Conor anymore. I believe at this point he’s a marquee attraction that, when he’s there, he warrants the biggest fights in the world, meaning UFC 300 does fit the bill. But that also lends you to ask this question: Does Conor McGregor at UFC 300 main event? Because generally when you do a UFC 300, 100, or 200, there are a number of title fights on that card,” Cormier

Those comments do hold some weight when we consider that McGregor’s form of late has been well below par. The fighter has lost the last three out of his four fights.

In addition, with no world title fights on the line, should McGregor be given a pass? And yet, there is no denying that the ‘Notorious’ is still the cash cow in the division.

Cormier’s comments got the attention of Chandler, who did in part question whether their fight should top the bill. However, at the same time, the MMA star recognized that their build up could make it worthy of headlining an event. After all, their rivalry on the TUF 31 series has set up the background for a mega fight.

Chandler On McGregor

“Every single time Conor has tweeted, every single time Conor has teased that he’s coming back, every single time they’ve watched ‘The Ultimate Fighter,’ every time they see me out here training, keeping my nose to the grindstone knowing that Conor is up against one of the toughest tests he’s had in his entire career, if not the toughest test, especially coming off of a two-year layoff, this fight has all the makings of fireworks. This fight has the makings of main event milestone material, so we’ll see,” Chandler
