Conor Benn’s Boxing Future In Tatters - What's Next?

Conor Benn’s future remains in Limbo as the boxer remains inactive.

The boxer failed two VADA tests for Clomiphene, meaning his fight with Chris Eubank Jr. was called off. Benn continued to maintain he was innocent, initially arguing that it was contamination. He failed to prove that, as he was suspended in April by UKAD last year. The National Anti-Doping Agency then lifted his suspension. However, he could only fight overseas since he did not have a British boxing license. He boxed twice, beating Rodolfo Orozco and Peter Dobson.

They were unanimous decision wins, raising question marks over whether Benn’s knockout power was due to PEDS. The British Boxing Board of Control and UKAD appealed the removal of Benn’s suspension. There were suggestions that Benn’s defense was based on jurisdiction and that he did not prove that he had no Clomiphene in his system. The British Boxing Board of Control and UKAD won their appeal, leaving Benn no closer to fighting again. Victor Conte has called for a final ruling to draw a line in the sand.

Benn’s Future

“It’s now July 2024, almost two years since Conor Benn tested positive twice for a PED. Pseudoscientific explanations were given, but none prevented suspension by the UK Anti-Doping Agency. In my opinion, this case was handled horribly by Benn’s team, and the hubris of [promoter] Eddie Hearn was not helpful. Still no adjudication?” Conte said

“I’m missing the fight Game, but life is good. It’s God’s plan. “All these Americans calling my name because my hands are tied, I’ll have any of you next. I don’t need a tune-up. I’ll see you all soon,” Benn stated

Benn vs. Eubank

Despite this being the case, Benn’s career has suffered. His brand is no longer the same. Matchroom has also signed big-name fighters at 140 and 147, pushing Benn down the pecking order. Jaron Ennis joined Matchroom as he had his first fight for promotion against David Avanesyan. Subriel Matis has also joined Matchroom. He lost his IBF Junior Welterweight Title against Liam Paro, and the latter is with Matchroom.

The rise of Saudi Arabia also means that the boxing scene is focused on making the biggest fights. Unfortunately, Benn does not fit into that. He was linked with a fight against Manny Pacquiao. Talks had taken place. While they met and faced off in Saudi Arabia, the fight was never made. Pacman will likely face Mario Barrios, the WBC Welterweight Champion if he does fight back. And yet, Eubank Jr. is still open to the Benn fight.

“I’ve been in the game for 12 years now and I’m still hungry. I’m still excited. I’m still in love with the sport of boxing. [And] I’m in a blessed position right now where there are different names out there that are mega fights that everybody wants to see. Canelo Alvarez, Terence Crawford, Conor Benn, Billy Joe Saunders – and that’s just off the top of my head. There are many more fights out there that can be made, even domestically, so I’m in an exciting position,” Eubank stated
