Chisora Backs Himself To Beat Joyce

Dereck Chisora is confident he can beat Joe Joyce in his next fight.

Chisora faces Joyce on 27 July, live from the O2 Arena in London. His last fight was a unanimous decision win over Gerald Washington. That was a perfect response to the tenth-round TKO loss against Tyson Fury. Chisora has only two wins out of his last six fights. He has come up short against the big names, losing to Fury, Joseph Parker, Oleksandr Usyk and Dillian Whyte.

While that may be the case, he fancies his chances against Joyce. ‘The Juggernaut’ is known for having one of the best chins in the sport. And yet, there are question marks over that of late. Zhilei Zhang stopped him, as the fight was waved off in the sixth round due to Joyce’s swollen eye. The rematch was even worse, with the fight ending in the third round. Joyce did bounce back with a win against Kash Ali in his last bout, stopping him in the final tenth round. Both men are at the late stage of their careers, so Chisora fancied his chances of winning.

Chisora On Joyce

“I didn’t want this fight. They wanted it. He wanted it. It’s a good fight. After the Chinese guy [Zhilei Zhang] beat him up badly, I think he has PTSD now. I went to see his fight against Kash Ali in Birmingham, and he was tuned into the same mood, just trying to bully himself and use his head as defense. We’ll figure it out. He’s not going to change his boxing style in the next four or five weeks,” Chisora said

There have been concerns over Chisora’s health. The boxer has seemingly shown signs of slurred speech, which is consistent with CTE. He is also 40 years old, with nothing else to prove in the sport. He is unlikely to get a world title shot, nor is he likely to secure a fight on a Saudi show. That leaves Chisora with questions to ask about his motivation for fighting.

Chisora’s Future

There is perhaps the chance to secure a few more paydays and then take a job in boxing as a pundit. He has appeared more on camera when it comes to boxing fan channels. He has developed a reputation for never ducking anyone, even if he has come up short at the elite level.  He has said he has three fights left before he considers retiring. But that will depend on how good he looks against Joyce.

“I enjoy training. I enjoy everything I do in the morning, wake up early, go to the gym, sparring, the long runs, everything. The moment I don’t enjoy it is the day I hang up the gloves. There’s no way you can get it. When you’re about to walk in the ring in front of 20,000 or 50,000, it’s difficult to get that buzz apart from boxing and football. Yeah I still got the bug. I still love it. I’ve said I’ve got three more fights, and this will be number 48,” Chisora revealed
