Charlo Vs. Tszyu Could Finally Happen In October

Jermell Charlo and Tim Tszyu could finally face each other in October. 

Tszyu is the WBO mandatory for Charlo, as the latter is the current undisputed junior-middleweight champion.

However, the latter has been out of action for 17 months since his win over Brian Castano, as Tszyu has been waiting in the wings for the fight.

They had been on course to fight each other in January, only for Charlo to suffer a hand injury. The fight was then further delayed, as Charlo’s injury took longer to heal.

The WBO has reportedly set a deadline for September 30th, 2023, for Charlo to do the defense. If that date is bypassed, there is a chance that Charlo could be stripped unless the WBO were to permit otherwise. 

But now Tsyzu’s manager, Glen Jennings, has teased a possible fight date.

“I think we’ve gotten to the point now where it’s almost the date, and we’ve actually agreed on that [October]. It’s now just a timing issue now for their side to make the announcement more than anything, I think.

“They’re very confident that we’re going to move ahead with it. We’ve always been confident. I just think that guys like Jermell are champions for a reason.

“They hold the belts. I don’t think his character or his ego would not let this fight happen, to be honest,” Jennings

The fight would be a major test for Charlo, given that Tsyzu is in impressive form. Rather than waiting for Charlo’s hand to heal and stay on the sidelines, he has been fighting top competition.

Major victories over Tony Harrison and Carlos Ocampo were impressive, given the manner in which the Australian stopped them. 

As such, Chris Algieri has backed Tsyzu to come out victorious on the basis of his current form. His following comments confirmed as much.

“I think he’s streaking towards this Charlo fight. The fact that this fight is happening now makes it a much more competitive fight, and honestly, by the time that fight happens, Tszyu could be the favorite,” Algieri
