Charlo Slams Crawford’s Tactics, Tszyu Welcomes Charlo Being Stripped And More

Jermell Charlo threw shade at Terence Crawford’s victory over Errol Spence Jr. by questioning his tactics.
Bud stopped Spence in the ninth round to become the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era.
And in the process of doing so, he became undisputed in a second weight class following his accomplishments at 140 pounds.
The manner and ease of the victory was impressive, as he knocked Spence down three times.
And during the second round, Crawford demonstrated his superior physicality by pushing Spence off him during a clinch, much to the surprise of many.
But rather than give Crawford much credit, Charlo downplayed the win by scrutinizing the legality of Crawford’s punches.
Charlo On Crawford
“Errol had a bad night. It was nothing that made me be like, ‘Oh, Crawford’s something spectacular.’ He didn’t throw that many punches. I don’t know why none of you are talking about some of these behind-the-head shots and s*** that you didn’t mention. I saw a bunch of behind-the-head shots during that fight,” Charlo said
Nevertheless, those comments have to be taken with a pinch of salt. Charlo and Spence are stablemates, as they both train under Derrick James.
So naturally, Charlo may view things from a certain angle. In addition, that narrative plays into the idea of having a rematch. But in reality, Spence will have to do a lot more to get a victory if they square off once again.
In addition to this, Jermell Charlo has responded to the WBO’s decision to strip his junior middleweight belt once his fight with Canelo Alvarez begins.
Having become undisputed at 154 pounds, Charlo was required to face his WBO mandatory Tim Tszyu. The latter was set to face Charlo in January only for the American to pull out due to injury.
Although there were attempts to make the fight happen, Charlo’s injury took longer to heal. But once it did, he chose to face Canelo instead.
As a result, Tszyu will move up to the status of full champion once the Canelo bout begins.
The decision, however, has impacted a potential undisputed fight between Terence Crawford and Charlo, as the latter was not best pleased.
Charlo On Being Stripped
“I think it’s unfair You know, the WBO been at my neck for a very long time. When I injured my hand, they was, ‘Hey, you need to submit this.’ I’m going back and forth to the doctors, having to do f—— CAT scans and MRIs and all kinda s**t…I’m still undisputed, no matter what. I’m undisputed to my children, I’m undisputed to my family, I’m undisputed to the boxing world. And that’s it. I’m cool with that.
“I’m Jermell Charlo … now I’m fightin’ for undisputed, [going up] two weight divisions. So, you should get the best of me. You know what I’m saying? And be proud of what I’m doing, instead of all that hatin’ and knockin’ me. I shoulda been on the pound-for-pound list. For anybody that don’t have me on it, I shoulda been on it,” Charlo
Although that may have been the case, Tszyu was not so forgiving. He backed the decision of the WBO on the grounds that he had been kept in the dark over his position as a mandatory.
Therefore, he had no sympathy with Charlo who had ultimately not gotten a fight made with him.
Tszyu Responds
“Because when you do the wrong thing like he has, you deserve to be stripped. So I’m glad the WBO went and did the right thing. It also means my name will be remembered forever on that list of world champions. And this belt, it won’t have just been handed to me. I won the interim title from a guy like Tony Harrison … so nothing has been just given to me,” Tszyu
And that has been shown in his following comments. The Australian expanded on how he is turning his attention away from Charlo to facing Brian Mendoza.
The latter is the current WBC interim champion, making him one of the best names in the division, apart from Charlo. And that is where Tszyu’s focus is at.
“Right now, the top three in our division is Charlo, myself and then Mendoza. He’s the WBC interim-champion, sharp and slippery, throws unorthodox punches. And he has power in both hands. Boasts highlight reel knockouts. So when you look at his last few performances, and my last few performances, it’s the fireworks fight of the division right now,” Tszyu
Charlo has a big September coming up, as the outcome of the Canelo fight will define his career forever. But whether it is in a positive way is anyone’s guess. Time will tell.
