Chandler Ready For McGregor At 185; Strickland Reacts To Du Plessis' Controversial Comments

Michael Chandler is not fazed by the weight set for his fight with Conor McGregor.

The duo had been linked with a fight since their days as rival coaches on the TUF 31 series. After months of waiting, McGregor announced the fight on New Year’s Day. The date is June 19, 2024, during International Fight Week in Vegas. The major talking point about the fight was the weight. McGregor announced that it would take place at 185 pounds.

McGregor Vs. Chandler

“Ladies and gentlemen, a Happy New Year to you all. I’d like to announce the return date for myself, the ‘Notorious’ Conor McGregor, the greatest comeback of all time will take place in Las Vegas for International Fight Week, June the 29th… and the opponent, Michael Chandler. And the weight, Mr. Chandler, 185 pounds,” McGregor

Chandler is known for fighting at lightweight, which he has done for most of his career. Therefore, a fight at 185 pounds means Chandler must move up two weight classes. He also comes into the fight with a loss against Dustin Poirier in a bout over a year ago. Since McGregor has also been inactive, questions remain over how much of a factor the weight will impact the fight. Regardless, Chandler was unfazed by the stipulations put on him.

Chandler Reacts

“I always said I wanted you at your biggest, your baddest and your best. 185 would look good on me,” Chandler said

Chandler may be unfazed by McGregor, but the same cannot be said about Sean Strickland’s recent altercation with Dricus Du Plessis. Both fighters were in attendance at UFC 296 to watch Leon Edwards defend his welterweight title against Colby Covington.

Strickland walked through the crowd during the fight and began punching the South African. Security intervened to separate the fighters. In the pre-fight build-up, Du Plessis had touched a nerve when he mentioned Strickland’s past about being abused by his father. That caused the middleweight champion to lash out. In his comments on the Theo Von ‘This Past Weekend’ podcast, he said:

Strickland On Du Plessis

“There’s some things that are off limits. You don’t really talk about a man’s wife. You don’t talk about a man’s kids. And you don’t about a kid being abused. These things are all off limits. Once he crossed that …. I tried to f*****g ignore it. I was boiling whenever Dricus (Du Plessis) goes on there and he jokes about that s**t. Dude, you have no idea. I’ll f*****g kill you. You have no idea. I think the issue is too, when you’re a kid and you’re made to be a victim your whole life, as an adult, you’re like never again. I’ll f*****g kill you,” Strickland stated

Those comments have set up the narrative for a big fight as Strickland and Du Plessis face off on January 20, 2024, at UFC 297. Come fight night, one fighter will have to leave with a loss, in light of everything that has been said.
