Showtime Championship Boxing returned with three fights featuring Carlos Adames vs. Julian Williams, Fernando Martinez vs Jade Bornea and Erickson Lubin vs. Luis Arias.

Adames, the WBC interim middleweight champion, was the favorite going into the fight due to Williams not having beaten a championship-caliber fighter since his win over Jarrett Hurd in May 2019.

In a controversial nine-round TKO, Adames successfully defended his WBC interim middleweight title against Williams.

Adames’ aggressive strategy paid off from the start as Williams could not deal with the speed of the combinations.

While Williams found his footing in the third round, utilizing the variation off his jab, it was to no avail.

Adames’ right hand was simply offering too many problems, as that halted Williams’ momentum.

And it al came to a head in the ninth round, as Adames pushed Williams towards the ropes and unleashed a flurry of punches aimed at his head and body.

Although Williams appeared to have weathered the storm, the referee intervened and stopped the fight, despite Williams still being aware of what was going on.

That did not go down well with Williams, who did not hold back on his disgust.

“I think it was a terrible stoppage. But what can I do? I’m healthy, I feel fine. I thought it was a terrible stoppage.

“I thought the fight was pretty much even and I was taking over, and he was getting tired. You know what I mean? But what can I do,” Williams

“I think the referee stopped it (when he should have). Because he could’ve really got hurt. That’s when the referee stopped it, when I hit him with those two rights. And if I would’ve hit him with another one, he would’ve got really hurt,” Adames

Fernando Martinez Vs. Jade Bornea

In the other title fight, Fernando Martinez successfully defended his IBF junior-bantamweight title by securing a remarkable eleventh-round stoppage against Jade Bornea.

Despite being undefeated, Martinez struggled to keep up with Bornea’s pace in the initial rounds.

Bornea was able to counter at will and pick off his opponent, as things were not going Bornea’s way. However, as the fight progressed, Martinez began to get success.

Martinez increased his attack, forcing Bornea to succumb under the pressure with a series of powerful right-hand punches on his eye.

Bornea struggled to keep up with the pace. And in the eleventh round, it was all over as the fight was stopped due to Bornea’s heavy bleeding from the ear.

“I definitely saw the injury in the ear. The inflammation was like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I hit him with a left and it popped, exploded.

“I even told the referee be cautious I think he’s really hurt. That’s when I just kept going at the ear and trying to finish this fight. I kept on going for blood like a shark on a mission.

“Enough is enough. I want to face the champions. We made it evident that we are very superior to the number one contender and now we want the truly big fights,” Martinez

While those two title fights provided fans with plenty of entertainment, Erickson Lubin also beat Luis Arias via a fifth-round KO to wrap up a wonderful night of boxing.

Boxing has often divided the fan base with question marks over the quality of matchmaking and value for money. But Showtime has continued its resurgence in 2023 with another impressive card. And that can only be a good thing.
