Canelo Won’t Fight Eubank Jr. – ‘It’s Totally False’

Eddy Reynoso says Canelo Alvarez has no intention of fighting Chris Eubank Jr.
Reynoso’s comments arrived following reports that Eubank Jr. had begun talks with the Mexican fighter. They were reportedly in discussions before Canelo chose to face Edgar Berlanga. Canalo beate the Puerto Rican via a unanimous decision on Mexican Independence Weekend. However, BOXXER’s Ben Shalom recently confirmed that this was the fight for Eubank Jr.
“For me the two fights for me are Canelo and Conor Benn. We’ve already started small conversations around the Canelo fight. Obviously that [Canelo fight] was close last time. I believe that’s a fight that interests Canelo. You can imagine the press conference in the UK and the US, it would be absolutely huge,” Shalom said
That would see Canelo fight in the UK for the first time. This would have been an attractive proposition, especially since it could potentially sell out Wembley Stadium. It would also align with Canelo’s recent tendency of not facing the biggest names while also being able to command a hefty fee. Reports indicated that he made $35 million for the Berlanga fight and brought in a live gate of $17 million. However, Reynoso has denied that the fight will happen. The trainer revealed that Canelo has no interest in taking this fight, which is understandable since he is likely to get a lot of criticism.
Reynoso Reacts
“It’s totally false. Eubank had his chance to fight Canelo in September, and the only thing he did was complicate the negotiations. We will not touch base with him again for a future fight! Whatever I tell you is always true! I don’t like making statements, but what I declare is true,” Reynoso said
There are several other options available for Canelo. He could give fans the long-awaited David Benavidez fight. The Mexican Monster was the WBC Interim Champion at super middleweight for over two years. But the fight never happened, with Canelo claiming that he wanted between $150 and $200 million to make that fight. The Mexican Monster would eventually move up to 175 pounds, meaning the fight is more difficult. There is also the option of taking on Terence Crawford. Crawford is coming off a victory against Israil Madrimov.
He desire to face Canelo would require him to move up two weight classes. Alvarez has given mixed comments towards the prospect of this fight. The other alternative is to take on William Scull. Scull is the IBF Champion at 168 after having beaten Vladimir Shishkin to win the vacant title. Before this, he was set to face Canelo. Scull was his IBF mandatory. However, Alvarez chose to face Berlanga instead, as the IBF stripped Canelo of his belt. Canelo is a four-weight world champion and a cash cow of the sport. That has given him enough leverage to decide who he should fight. But based on Reynoso’s comments, Eubank Jr. has missed that boat.
