Canelo Warns Berlanga – ‘Let Him Feel So Much Pain’
Canelo Alvarez has warned Edgar Berlanga that he must be at his best to have a chance of beating him.
Canelo defends his WBA, WBC and WBO belts on Mexican Independence Weekend on September 14. He is the massive favorite, having only lost to Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol. He enters the fight with a win over Jamie Munguia in his last fight. Berlanga may be 22-0, but this is his biggest challenge.
Berlanga stopped Padraig McCrory in his last bout. During their presser, Berlanga attempted to get into Canelo’s head. He confronted Canelo for cutting him off while he was speaking. Canelo refused to back down, forcing the two to confront each other. They were separated by security, but Canelo vowed to punish Berlanga. Now, he has talked up his skills by warning Berlanga of what is to come.
Canelo On Berlanga
“He’s good, he’s strong, he’s young, he’s hungry. But it’s nothing new for me. I been in there with all the kind of fighters, difficult fighters, strong fighters, and I’m just going to go in there and do my business. I’m going to find out September 14 but, you know, I’m strong. I’m strong and I’m looking to do my best there and let him feeling so much pain. So I’m focused on that. Me too [I am strong]. I’m not heavyweight but I’m more stronger than them,” Canelo said
The fight is expected to be a routine win. Canelo’s recent opposition suggests he is more content with facing less riskier opponents for bigger paydays. A fight with Berlanga will sell since he has a massive Puerto Rican fanbase. It also allowed Canelo to bypass a dangerous fight with David Benavidez.
The Mexican Monster will now fight at 175 as he is the WBC mandatory for the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol. Turki Alalshikh has said that Canelo reached out to him to suggest a possible collaboration in the future. But that all depends on Canelo getting past Berlanga. He has never overlooked his prior opponents, beating Jermell Charlo and Berlanga despite the background noise over the Benavidez fight. He is ready to do the same on such a big occasion.
Canelo’s Mindset
“For me it’s always great to represent my country on those days, I always try to fight in those days because it’s important for me and for my Mexican fans. So I’m glad to be here, glad to fight in May and September and I’m very honored. I don’t know how quick but I’m going to do my job and I’m going to try to let him to feel so much pain and then knock out him. I don’t know what round. He already know and he’s going to need a really good camp so I hope he prepare himself really well because he’s going to need it,” Alvarez stated
If Canelo comes through Berlanga, there will naturally be question marks over his next opponent. If it is not Crawford or Benavidez, then fans may become restless. There are only so many other fights he can take.
