Canelo Wants Crawford Rematch On His Return

Canelo Alvarez is setting his sights on a return to the ring in September 2026, with his top priority being a rematch against Terence Crawford.
Canelo’s manager, Eddy Reynoso, recently confirmed the Mexican star will skip his traditional Cinco de Mayo fight date in May. This break will allow him to fully recover from elbow surgery he underwent following his September loss to Crawford. Despite the unanimous decision loss that cost him his undisputed status at Super Middleweight, Canelo has made the Crawford rematch his “Plan A.” However, securing the sequel will require meeting a hefty price tag.
Since the victory, Crawford’s camp has stated that he will only consider a second fight if Canelo’s camp guarantees a $100 million purse. Crawford’s team argues that as the reigning champion and the world’s pound-for-pound king, he is in the position to dictate the terms. Adding a layer of complexity, Crawford was recently stripped of his WBC Super Middleweight Title.
Bud failed to pay the sanctioning body a required $300,000 fee from the Canelo fight. While a rematch with Canelo remains a possibility, Crawford is reportedly exploring a move to the Middleweight division (160 pounds) to challenge for a title to become a six-weight world champion.
Will It Happen?
“I think Crawford is done. If it ain’t $100 million to go down and fight those guys [Janibek Alimkhanuly, Erislandy Lara, and Carlos Adames] and let them guys do all the hard work. Let them collect the belts, and then we fight for undisputed. That’s it. Other than that, I don’t see Crawford fighting no more. There’s no need. Crawford don’t need to do no more.
“He’s done everything that there is to do. Unless they want to give him a 100 million, make a big spectacle, and put the belts on the line. That’s the only way I can see that. 100 million no less. Not 75, not 90, 100. It’s got to be 100 million. If it’s not 100 million, then what is he doing it for? He ain’t going for nothing. Who can turn down 100 million? Who can turn down 80?,” Crawford’s coach (Bernie Davis)
