Canelo Taunts Berlanga During Kickoff Presser - 'He's Dreaming About Me'

Canelo Alvarez and Edgar Berlanga held their kick-off presser ahead of their September 14 fight.

Alvarez defends his WBO, WBA and WBC belts at 168 after having beaten Jaimie Munguia in his last fight. He was ordered to defend his belts against the IBF mandatory William Scull. But Canelo was stripped after failing to do so, as Berlanga was chosen. The decision meant that a Canelo fight with David Benavidez was unlikely, as the Mexican Monster confirmed that he would stay at 175 pounds.

There is increasing speculation that Canelo could fight Terence Crawford next. Bud is coming off a win over Israil Madrimov, which made him a four-weight world champion. Crawford wanted the fight, provided the money was right, leaving the pressure on Canelo to win.

Berlanga is 22-0. He entered the fight with a win over Padraig McCrory in his last fight. 17 of his wins are by knockout. But this is by far his biggest test. Berlanga knows a win makes him a PPV view star. He has the opportunity to cause a massive upset by winning on Mexican Independence Day. He will have the support of his Puerto Rican fans behind him.

Initial Reaction

“Every day, we are preparing. We know that Berlanga is a good fighter, a strong, undefeated fighter. The confrontations within boxing between Mexico and Puerto Rico are always intense fights, very morbid fights, and, above all, very good boxing. Puerto Rico has produced many world champions and Hall of Fame fighters.

“Mexico has done the same. It will be a very attractive fight against a great fighter in Berlanga who’s undefeated and faced some of the best fighters competing at 168 pounds over the last few years,” Eddie Reynoso (Canelo’s trainer) said

“First and foremost, I want to thank the good Lord for putting me in this position. This is the opportunity of a lifetime. I deserve to be here, and I’m going to shock the world and silence the critics by delivering a masterful performance and knocking out Canelo Álvarez on Sept. 14. I will prove that my Puerto Rican heritage surpasses Mexican boxing, from Gómez to Trinidad to Cotto, and now to Berlanga. I will reclaim what is rightfully ours. I’m ready to make this a historic firefight, continuing the greatest rivalry in boxing,” Berlanga said
