Canelo Shows Off His Insane Power - 'Berlanga About To Go To Sleep'

Canelo Alvarez showed off his power shots in his latest training footage for Edgar Berlanga

Canelo takes on Berlanga on September 14 during Mexican Independence Day as he defends his three titles at 168. He is no longer undisputed after being stripped by the IBF for failing to defend against his mandatory William Scull. The fight has drawn a mixed response, with fans unhappy that the David Benavidez fight is off the table. The Mexican Monster has moved up to 175. Canelo’s fight will also compete against UFC 306, which takes place at The Sphere in Las Vegas. His team is discussing the fight, as they expect another good performance.

“Every day, we are preparing. We know that Berlanga is a good fighter, a strong, undefeated fighter. The confrontations within boxing between Mexico and Puerto Rico are always intense fights, very morbid fights, and, above all, very good boxing. Puerto Rico has produced many world champions and Hall of Fame fighters.

“Mexico has done the same. It will be a very attractive fight against a great fighter in Berlanga who’s undefeated and faced some of the best fighters competing at 168 pounds over the last few years,” Eddie Reynoso (Canelo’s trainer) said

Canelo’s Power

While the fight was not what the fans were hoping for, Canelo is pressing ahead as normal. The following footage shows Canelo hitting the heavy bag with combinations. While he may have slowed down over the years, his power is still there, having dropped Jaimie Munguia in his last fight. Alvarez did the same to Jermell Charlo in the fight before. Although he did not get the stoppage, had Canelo pressed the action, he could have ended the bout.

There are question marks over whether fans will support the PPV. Canelo charged fans $84.99 for the Charlo fight, while the Munguia fight was even more at $89.99. At a time when boxing fans have plenty of choices, they have to decide whether they can invest in fights which are not deemed competitive. This year, fans have already seen Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk, Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia, and Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol come. Those fights are much bigger, meaning fans could boycott Canelo. Oscar De La Hoya felt that it was inevitable to send Canelo a message.

“The September 14th fight has been made. Canelo versus Edgar Berlanga, a fight that nobody asked for. Fans are beginning to boycott Canelo for ducking, you know who. Also, they’re going up against the UFC at The Sphere. Good luck with making a splash with that one,” De La Hoya stated

If Canelo gets through the fight, Turki Alalshikh is keen on making the Terence Crawford fight. But he has clarified that he will not be held hostage to Canelo’s demands. The fight is less big now since Canelo is no longer undisputed. Meanwhile, Crawford may not be keen to take it if he has to fight at least two fights at 168 to become undisputed. But now that the Benavidez fight is off the table, Canelo’s options are limited. But it all starts with beating Berlanga.
