Canelo Returns To Training, Haney Trains With Freddie Roach

In the latest boxing news, Canelo Alvarez is already back in training following his win over Jermell Charlo.

The Mexican beat the American, who had jumped up two weight classes from 154 pounds, via a unanimous decision to keep the undisputed super middleweight titles.

In the aftermath of the fight, Alvarez remained tight-lipped on the possibility of fighting Benavidez next, going so far as to state that ‘we don’t know.’ As of now, the Mexican Monster is preparing to face Demetrius Andrade on November 25th, 2023.

A win for Benavidez keeps the boxer as the WBC mandatory, a position he has held for over a year, as the calls on the WBC to call the mandatory will only increase. With that being said, Alvarez’s training preparations have begun.

Canelo Returns To Training

In the video above, Canelo can be seen shadow boxing as he undertakes a footwork drill. It is not exactly clear if an opponent has been found, but one thing for sure is that Alvarez’s next fight remains uncertain.

The Mexican recently signed a three-fight deal with PBC, and with two fights left to go following the win over Charlo, Showtime’s exit from boxing could not have come at a worse time. And as PBC seeks out a new network, the Mexican much like other fighters, will have to hang on tight moving forward.

Haney Trains With Roach

Meanwhile, David Haney has begun training with Freddie Roach ahead of his bout with Regis Prograis on December 9th, 2023.

The boxer aims to become a two-division champion with a win over Prograis for the latter’s WBC title at 140 pounds. The narrative heading into the fight is that there are question marks over Haney’s punching power, which will be answered at the higher weight class.

Despite having an undefeated record that stands at 30-0, Haney’s boasts only 15 knockouts. Meanwhile, Prograis is arguably one the hardest-hitting junior welterweights in the division. Out of the champion’s 29 wins, 24 have come by way of knockout.

With that being said, working alongside Roach will no doubt increase the boxer’s offence. Roach is known for working on offence, having guided Manny Pacquiao’s career as the latter became a devastating knockout artist.

As such, in the following video, Haney can be seen on the pads, working with combinations under the direction of Roach. And by the looks of it, Haney is intent on a statement win.

Moving forward, Haney and Alvarez face the crunch moments in their careers. A fight with Benavidez continues to be talked about, leaving Alvarez with more pressure to face the fighter.

As for Haney, a win over Prograis would cap off a remarkable period of becoming undisputed at 135 pounds and then also being a two-weight world champion.

And at a time when boxers may not necessarily chase the legacy, Haney and Canelo have managed to break the mould somewhat. And that may pay dividend for the next crop of fighters who are coming up.
