Canelo’s Trainer Dismisses Talk Of A $55 Million Guarantee To Fight Benavidez – ‘He’s 100 Percent Ducking, Quack Quack’
Canelo Alvarez‘s team has denied an offer of a $55 million guarantee to fight David Benavidez after the latter’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, confirmed it.
The two have been linked with a fight ever since Canelo Beat Jermell Charlo in his last fight to retain his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title. The Mexican beat the American in a one-sided unanimous decision as Charlo moved up two weight divisions from 154 pounds. Benavidez defended his WBC Super Middleweight Interim Belt with a stoppage victory over Demetrius Andrade.
Talks over a fight for Cinco de Mayo Weekend and Mexican Independence Day were mentioned. Although nothing has been agreed, reports indicate that Benavidez will move up to 175 pounds to fight Oleksandr Gvozyk for the WBC Mandatory position in June.
Benavidez’s Future
“Very proud to announce a sensational fight which the @WBCBoxing has approved to sanction for the interim Lightheavyweight championship Benavidez vs Gvozdyk . Wish the best of luck for both champions @Benavidez300 vs @AlexandrGvozdyk @TGBpromotions @premierboxing,” Maurcio Sulaiman said
If Benavidez wins, he will be in line to face the winner of Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev for all the belts at 175 pounds. But in the meantime, Benavidez’s promoter has stated that Canelo been offered a $55 million guaranteed purse to get the fight over the line. But Alvarez’s team have denied this.
Canelo’s Options
If that fight is not made, then Edgar Berlanga is an alternative. This would fit in line with Canelo’s announcement that he made on Mexican TV in which he stated that he would be fighting an American.
Jermall Charlo has already backtracked on his comments that he was fighting Canelo next with reports that PBC is unwilling to offer Canelo a guaranteed purse of $35 million for that fight.
Instead, PBC is looking only to offer that amount if Canelo were to fight Jaime Munguia since the fight could sell on Cinco Demayo Weekend or Mexican Independence Day. A fight with Terence Crawford has also been ruled out after Canelo stated that there would be no credit given to him if he came out victorious against a smaller man who would be moving up three weight classes.
Berlanga is an American who fights on DAZN and is undefeated. Since Canelo has fought on DAZN previously after having left them to sign a three-fight deal with PBC, a deal could be made.
Berlanga is also undefeated, which would add a credible name to Canelo’s resume, even if the Benavidez fight is what boxing fans demand to see. By the looks of it, Eddie Hearn wants to make that bout, with DAZN willing to pay the necessary purse to get it done.
“He looks for a world championship, and with Canelo Alvarez currently without an opponent for May 4th, we put this man’s name in the hat with an impressive performance on Saturday night. I’m calling it out now; Canelo doesn’t have an opponent. If Berlanga wins in spectacular fashion – Mexico vs Puerto Rico on May 4th,” Hearn stated
